Specific to Premiere Elements version 15
by abgtc » Wed Mar 01, 2017 5:36 pm
Is it possible for a video to have too many effects? I have a video less than 5 minutes long, with about 30 clips, each of which has multiple effects. When I export it, some (but not all) of the clips have inaccurate framing, as shown. Any ideas what’s going on? FrameInPremiere.jpg FrameExported.jpg

What model of camcorder is your original footage coming from and what format and resolution is the video?
A large number of effects might bog down the program, but it should affect your output video. More likely one effect in the group is messing things up.

I didn't shoot it, though isn't there a place inside the program I can look up the specs?
But I'm not sure that's where the problem lies, since I've been using Elements 15 on similar videos for about six months with no problems, and indeed this specific video works fine when no effects are added.
Regarding the "one evil effect" theory, that's intriguing. But I only really have one effect, Cropping, which has never been a problem before. Here, though, it's on almost every one of the clips. (The only other effect is Image Control/Contrast, which is on two or three clips.)

You may need to crack open your original video to see what's up there.
Download the free program Media Info and open your original video in it. Set the program's View menu to Tree and copy the report it generates.
I'm not clear on your question though. In your first post you say you have multiple effects on each video -- but in your last post you say only have applied the Crop effect? Am I misunderstanding?

Sorry if I wasn't clear about the effects; of the 20 or 30 clips, I have Contrast on just 2 or 3. Almost all the others have Cropping. But I've used Cropping and Contrast extensively on other projects and have had no problems.

That's me too –- I posted on both in the hope of spreading the net a bit more widely. But it's pretty much a dead end there too. I may just have to start removing effects till the export works.

And keep track of which effects or effects work or don't work.

You don't have to remove any effects. You can enable/disable an effect in the Applied Effects panel.
The second sample you posted has an incorrect aspect ratio. It is squeezed horizontally. It's as if your 16:9 footage is being treated as 4:3. Find out why and I'll bet you solve your problem. This could be a result of scaling asymmetrically. You would get a similar result if the first clip posted were to be scaled vertically a different amount than horizontally. It would also appear the image is not centered on the frame.

That's what I meant.

Right -- but that's why I posted! The first sample is a screenshot from Elements, the second is the same frame after Exporting. So I know it's not exporting correctly, but not why.
I speculated that it's the number of effects, although I suppose it could be one particular instance of an effect. But as I say, I've used both Cropping and Contrast repeatedly in countless projects with no problems, which is why I thought that in this case it could be the sheer number; there are far more Crops in this project than I've ever used.

It could also be an issue of mismatch between project and export settings.

Possibly, but I've used these settings for dozens of clips from the same source without a problem.
During the last hour I've been stripping out just the cropping effects and found that even one screwed up the export. So I'll do it without cropping and hope it's an anomalie for this one video.
Thanks for the ideas.

Is "Zoom" selected in the crop control properties?

Great question, Bob!
I certainly don't see anything in the specs that would indicate that this clip is anything other than a standard 720x480 (1.2 PAR) MPEG. And I assume that all of the videos in this project are using exactly the same specs and that these are the Project Settings abgtc is seeing under the Edit menu.
Is that the case, abgtc?
