Canopus 110

Well I ordered the canopus 110 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/control ... 146&is=REG , thru Chuck Engels.com of course. Should get it 4/27. I have a bunch of tapes that were my son's. These tapes for the most part fit into a vhs adapter that I have. I will have to look but I may have the camera too, don't know what it was. First time in over two years now that I have even looked at this stuff. Finally decided it was time to put the past behind me and see what is on these tapes and try to capture it for his kids. Along with these I have a number of my own old videos that I copied to vhs a long time ago. Note to self "get going"

Clayton, you will want to use the adapter and a VCR, don't use the camcorder to play the tapes.
The playback heads on the VHS-C camcorders are not very good, use the best VCR you can

Right, I have a vcr to do this. Most of the tapes fit into my vhs adapter, but some tapes are from an unknown source and wont fit into the adapter. I am going to have to determine what they were filmed with and then figure out how to capture them. May have to take them to a shop to have them transferred. I transferred some of my old 8mm to vhs years ago and then successfully transferred them to my computer using a card and adapter from pinnacle on my old computer. I don't anticipate any problems except with the unknown tapes.

I haven't got around to looking at the tapes yet. But I decided the vcr I had was very old and I needed a new one. So I ordered this sony product http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016G ... oh_product from amazon. Well me being somewhat electronically challanged, I didn't notice the "tunerless" comment or realize what it meant. Anyway when I received my recorder, the first thing it said was I would have to have a cable box to use it to record since there is no cable inlet to it. (I don't have a cable box). Well I realized it would still accomplish the original purpose but I was dissapointed. I went to Radio Shack (figured they are more knowledgable than Best Buy) and the guy told me most of the new products don't come with tuners anymore and that Radio Shack had no tuner or whatever I needed for this. So I am setting the product up and testing it out and low and behold to my joy the dvd player freezes while playing and can only be fixed by powering off and starting over. Immediately I went to Amazon and got an authorization for a return. Guess what.. I forgot to order thru Chuck Engels.com so there was a reason it didn't work. Now I am looking at dvd/vcr player/recorders with a built in tuner. Since I don't know a lot about these products, I have selected two at Amazon. Clayton, Do you need a High Definition combo? You can get a decent DVD/VCR combo at Wal Mart for about $60.
I have a Magnavox that I have been pretty happy with, but if you are going to be capturing VHS tapes from it I don't recommend the combo units. The VCR players in the combo units are usually very poor quality, they assume you won't use it very much I'm sure.

Unless you are getting a High End VCR, or a High Def player, you shouldn't have to pay more than $100.

Went looking at the walmart link and saw an interesting item. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... d=10298468 It appears to be a vcr player with a built in converter. Straight from vhs to computer without Pyro or canopus. Anyone used it. I am not interested in buying one, just curious.

That is a very interesting looking piece of equipment. I sure would be interested in hearing from anyone that has tried it.
