Something from the avant-garde file.

As a kid, I remember that kaleidoscopes always seemed like they should be more fun than they actually were. I guess all they need are a good, bouncy soundtrack!

Thanks Steve, Trying to select some music was a good challenge. The music is from a band called Opiuo. The hardest part was trying to get the camera to stay still and rotate the cylinder at the same time. The Kaleidoscope was an inexpensive child's toy and it used a selection of plastic beads to make the shapes. It might be fun to try and make just the reflective prism and walk around with the camera. hummmmm gears in head turning.... :)

I think you could sell that piece to a night club. It needs to be viewed on a big screen, dark room, & late night refreshments.

Yep, used to have one as a child. Kind of the mechanical version of a screen saver!

You can simulate the kaleidoscope using the Mirror effect. It's easier in Premiere Pro, because you can use nested sequences to build up the layers, but it can be done in Premiere Elements.

Here's a sample using the Muvipix logo:

FYI, After Effects comes with a kaleidoscope plugin effect.

In the 70's I used to have one of these

It was very cool and was like a Kaleidoscope for music on your TV.

One of the best songs to play through this was James Taylor "Whenever I See Your Smiling Face". Don't know why but it made the lights move just right :)

Psychedelic, man. :)
Never saw one of those Chuck. We made a light show box once with a plastic florescent light diffuser sheet and a string of flashing Christmas lights. In our teens at the time.

I am guessing that at some point you needed your parents out of the house to take full advantage of this :)

Bob I like that effect for After Effects I will need to check that out.

I was about 20 when I bought it, not living at home anymore :) Cost more than a weeks wages at the time but it was worth it. It would have been so much more impressive on a 50 inch LED TV. I've found some web sites where people are actually upgrading the old units to work with today's technology.

The effect is called "cc kaleida". AE also has a "kaleidoscopic" effect, but it's merely an animated shape layer -- personally, I can't see myself using it. CC Kaleida, on the other hand, can create some very interesting patterns and is a lot of fun to play with.
