Rotating GoPro platform?

Postby Ron Hunter » Mon Feb 24, 2014 4:22 pm

I would like to place my GoPro in the center of our dinner table and slowly rotate it to film my family members enjoying a meal. I would like for this device to have a rotation rate of something like 1 revolution per minute; I want to film my family members in real-time, not as a timelapse.

I have heard about "camalapse" but users say it has loud clicks as the time ticks off. Since I would like to also record the audio, that is a turn-off for me.

Ikea has a kitchen timer with good reviews for GoPro timelapse use, but the reviews say the unit rotates in fixed increments and I'd like smooth motion.

Camalapse and the Ikea timer seem geared towards timelapse. Any recommendations for real-time video recording?

These are silent. Not sure about rotation speed, but they are pretty slow. The leds can be turned on or off. Battery operated. They say solar too. Not sure how well that would work.

Thanks Paz, this looks like what I need. Do you have one, and if so, how did it work for you? The reviews for those things (Amazon) are all over the map. But they are cheap so I may try one anyway.

I use the IKEA timer and it works great. I also record the audio on a separate device that has better audio. I use an ipod with a Mikey Mic

Thanks Cheryl, one RPM would be perfect! Sidd, does the IKEA timer move smoothly or does it "click" around its rotation? How long does the IKEA timer take to complete one rotation?

The IKEA is smooth and does 180 degrees in 1 hour.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back on this.

I do have one. I found it!

Cons: The rotation speed will vary when running on the built in solar panels. I had it on my slant top desk, noticed it was moving under not terribly bright fluorescent lights at night, so no light through the window, and put a weight on it. It rotated about 3/4 of a circle in 45 seconds, so I thought originally it would go about 1 minute per revolution. Then it stopped.

Later, with a battery in place (AA) it appears to rotate about 2 times per minute with a very small camcorder remote control riding the platform on a level surface. There is a chance that a heavier weight might go more slowly.

Pros: Silent. Cheap.

HTH,

Paz

Thanks Paz, that helps a LOT. :exc:

That is what I'm looking for, a revolution rate of 1 to 2 turns per minute. Since I plan to put the GoPro on it, the weight should not be an issue.
