Computer Monitor??

Postby cincinedit » Fri Jan 11, 2013 11:59 pm

I am sorry to put this in the PRE 11 forum but I thought it relevant. The interface change on PRE11 is so different it has me thinking about getting a larger monitor. I know I can change the size and layout of things but it just feels like I need more room. I currently have a 24 inch and I am thinking of moving up to a 27. I know the other option and best is dual monitors but my desk does not have that kind of real-estate.

Most good monitor now have 1920x1080 resolution and can be found under $300. But more expensive one $350 and higher can be 1080P or 2560 x 1440 and cost up over $700

So what Brand, Monitor Size, and resolution are you using and are you happy with it now that you are using PRE11.

Currently using a 1080p 23inch - but not for PE11 - It's OK but more screen real estate is always welcome. There's a lot of love for 16:10 instead of 16:9 monitors - extra vertical space - but higher price. There's also the IPS vs TN debate. TN is "faster" but IPS produced better colour and viewing angles (and is higher priced).

Here's a recent opinion article listing 10 "mid range" monitors that might help you understand the different options around.

I have dual 23" monitors, don't know that one 27" would work for me but it might be just what you need :)
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

I, too, have dual monitors. In my case two relatively elderly 19" Samsung 940BF models with 1280 x 1024 resolution. Side by side they span 32".

When it is time to replace them (that is when one of them finally fails) I will go for a pair of 22" or so replacements. Fortunately I am not as limited for space as you are. I don't think that I could (or would) ever go back to a single monitor setup.
AMD Ryzen 3900x 12C/24T, ASUS x570 mobo, Arctic Liquid Freezer ll 280, Win11 64 bit, 64GB RAM, Radeon RX 570 graphics, Samsung 500GB NVMe 980 PRO (C:), Samsung 970 Evo SSD (D:), Dell U2717D Monitor, Synology DS412+ 8TB NAS, Adobe CS6.

If space is not an issue then what you really want is one of these:

And a secret mountain lair to take over the world from. ;)

In a slightly more serious mode I have dual monitors at work but I quite like the concept of triple monitors like this:

Especially the portrait/landscape combination. Lots of other products you probably can't afford but really really need on the site.

Keep in mind that these are digital displays, not analog. Increasing the size of the monitor makes the image bigger, but unless the number of pixels increases, you aren't adding more screen real estate. if your 24" monitor is 1920x1080, moving up to a 27" 1920x1080 won't change the proportions. It will just scale the same image bigger. That may help if you are having difficulty seeing the small detail, though. And, that may help you adjust the relative size of the panels more advantageously.

Adding a second monitor helps by adding additional pixels. You aren't magnifying the image, you're adding additional space where you can put things, resize them, and spread them out. You have less compromises in your working layout. The 16:10 monitors Chris mentioned also add additional pixels in the vertical dimension, but that's much less that what you would get with a second moniter -- they could be effective if all you need is a little more room.

I personally find dual monitors more effective than a single large monitor. But, if you don't have the room, you don't have the room. I also prefer monitors that use IPS panels. Check out the IPS monitors manufactured by LG. LG is a large producer of IPS panels and their panels are used by many of the other brand name monitors. They sell their own line of IPS monitors and the price is quite reasonable.

Thanks for this info. It is the same conclusion that I have come to but moving up to 2,560-by-1,440 requires some $$$. At this point I am leaning toward the Dell U2713HM

I've got a pair of Dell ST2220L (22" monitors) that I bought for $135 each at Micro-Center. They're 1920x1080 and have HDMI, DVI-D and VGA inputs. I think they look great. And from the edge of the left stand to the edge of the right stand, they only take up about 27".
Dell XPS 8500 desktop w/ Intel i7-3770 CPU @ 3.4ghz / 22 gigs RAM / Radeon HD7570 1g dedicated video memory/ PrEl 11 & 9 / Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 / After Effects CS4 / Olympus OM-D E-M5 DSLR (1080i HD video)

Time is money, life is change.

My previous laptop had an IPS monitor and I really miss that feature.

The monitor I currently have is not IPS and it will show a drastically lighter or darker image depending on my viewing angle.
