Pre11 and Lightroom

Postby decolb » Sat Oct 06, 2012 12:31 pm

Will PRE11 work as well with Lightroom rather than PSE to import photos?

Thanks, Dave

My question was not clear. I am interested in using LR for my basic organizer for photos which means there would be a different catalog set up for LR. Don't know if PRE11 can get photos from LR for a project directly or if one would have to go back through PSE which would rather cumbersome.

PRE11 can not get photos from LR for a project directly. But, you don't need to go through PSE either. You certainly could, but it's not necessary.

LR is a non-destructive photo processor. The original photos are not modified and any changes you make are stored in the LR catalog. To work with photos outside of LR, you must export the photos. At which time, the changes are applied and a new modified file is created. LR allows you to create export presets that allow for resizing. If you select the photos you want to include in your PRE11 project, you can batch export them using the preset you set up and you will get resized photos ready to use in your PRE project. You would then import them into your project using either get media from PC or drag and drop them from the export location into the project's media panel.

Thanks, Bob.
Presumably, one would have to set up a separate folder or catalog of sorts to hold the photos exported from LR. Does this process develope a stand alone piece of media or does it still rely on a connection back to the original in LR as it would in an import from PSE? I guess this folder could be placed in the general folder for the project.

Yes, a separate standalone piece of media is created when you export a photo from LR. That's necessary as any changes you may have made in LR don't exist outside LR -- the changes are stored separately in the LR catalog. A physical file must be created in order for it to be used in another application. The logical location to place these exported photos would be the project folder.

Incidently, when you import a photo into PRE using the PSE Organizer, you aren't maintaining a link back to the Organizer. Organizer passes along the name and location of the physical file and PRE stores that information in the project file. The project file is used from that point on. That's why it makes no difference how you import the photo.
