Sony Vegas Pro 9

Postby ryan_khoo » Thu Jul 23, 2009 1:32 pm

Hi there,

I just discovered that Sony Vegas Pro 9 has been out.

Q1. How different is it from Version 8 ? If I am familiar with Ver 8, do I have to re-learn all over again in Ver 9 ?

Q2. Is it worth upgrading from Ver 8 to Ver 9 ?

Thanks

I upgraded to version 9 (infact 9a was just released). But really there are very few changes from Pro 8, they changed the GUI a little, added a few new effects. Biggest changes are for professional users, they added support for XDCAM EX and RED, and it now supports frame sizes up to 4096x4096.

You can read the release notes for full details on what's new in Vegas Pro 9. This is from the 9.0a update, so the first bunch of items are changes / fixes; Scroll down to the section titled "New Features in Version 9.0" for what you're looking for:

I doubt you'll ever need to worry about having to "re-learn" Vegas when a new version comes out. They may add features and even make minor changes to the interface, but I don't imagine they'd ever completely change the way the program works.

I dont' think anyone here thought that Premiere Elements would change that much either until version 4 came out, that was a shock.

Have never really used Premiere Elements. Was that about the same time they also did the Premiere to Premiere Pro overhaul?

Yes Rob it was about that same time they came out with Premiere Elements.
Then about 2 years later they started making some drastic changes to the UI.

Thanks bStro,

I post the question earlier on because I saw the UI in Version 9 comes with two "video/screen windows", just like Final Cut & Adobe Premiere Pro. So I was worried that there's gonna be a major overhaul as I am already "quite comfortable" with Version 8 & learning Final Cut now. The last thing I want is that after fiddling with Final Cut & I come back to Sony Vegas only to see that it is so foreign ... I hate having to "re-learn" just because I "dissappear" for a while

Just curios, why all this video editing software has this tendency to move towards having 2 "video screens" ? It took me a while to get used to it in Final Cut, let alone understand it ....

Cheers

There are virtually no changes to the way you use Pro 9. There is the second monitor for your source footage, there are some new effects, but no real changes to the existing workflow.

Thanks Paul, it is re-assuring to hear that.

So, I suppose I shall stick to Version 8.

Thanks

Yes, if there is nothing in version 9 then you can skip the release and wait for Pro 10. Sony allows you to skip 3 or 4 releases and you can still upgrade.
