VirtualDub - Huge files

Postby Spot » Sun Dec 30, 2007 6:45 pm

Hi all, and Happy New Year.
I am starting a new project containing lots of video. To keep disk space at a premium I thought I would capture all the video with Windows Vista (as AVI) and then break each AVI up with a simple editor (VirtualDub) before importing into Elements.

Doing the last one I ran out of space (on an empty 320G drive!!).

VirtualDub by default sets it's video mode to Full Processing instead of Direct Stream Copy. (I know this NOW!) This results in incredibly large file sizes for the new AVIs. Like a 2G file into 10G of parts. Of course being organised I deleted (completely) the original captures as I went (yes...to save disk space!) so I now have all the video but have no disk space.

Is there any way I can reduce these AVIs in size or am I faced with capturing it all again?

Cheers,
JohnB

If your drive is totally full then you are out of luck. If not you can encode the files to DV-AVI in Virtual dub. Install the free Panasonic DV codec ( http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Pan ... _Codec.htm ). When converting in VirtualDub you go "File > Save as" after having selected the Panasonic DV codec in "Video > Compression".

I'll be having a beer or two to celebrate the new year myself, but I guess about 10 hours after you and 5 to 8 hours before the folks in the US. Happy new year to you :drunken:
