Connecting an iPod to a Plasma TV

Postby sidd finch » Sun Jun 26, 2011 8:47 am

I found a great way to take movies on the go. I use a 60GB iPod (5th gen) and purchased an iPod to RCA cable to connect the iPod to a friend’s 50” plasma TV. The picture and sound was great. I was surprised at how clear the picture was on such a big TV. I am starting to re-think my DVD collection and might just make it “portable” . And the great thing is that the iTunes movies I have purchased work great too.

I have all of my small videos on both Vimeo and my iPad. I haven't had much need to display on TV and use my Roku box and access Vimeo when I need to.

But I should keep an eye out for a cable. I think I can get an HDMI cable for the iPad.

I was going to buy one of those connectors myself and do this, Sidd. But the "genius" at the Apple Store said that it would only work with iTunes and not with YouTube or Netflix.

Is that true? If so, it would greatly increase its value in my book.

Odd, Steve. You would think that anything that shows on the screen would display via the external cable. I wish I had one to try...

Steve it has more to do with the version of iPod than anything else. My 5th Gen iPod works perfect. When I try to connect my iPhone it does not work. I am not sure if it is a software thing or the pin connector config. But for the iPod anything I can put on it will work with the Plasma. I am not aware of any iPad HDMI cable but it would be cool if it did.

Thanks, Sidd. That's nice to know!

Unfortunately, you have to buy a $40 Apple connector to make the connection. The generic ones available on Amazon won't work -- I've learned the hard way.

I connect my iPad to our TV and watch Netfix through it all of the time. This weekend I watched a few of the old Columbo TV shows. Good stuff.

Steve I purchased a generic and it is the one I use now so maybe the quality is suspect.

As I understand it, the official Apple connectors include a verification chip of some kind.

But apparently some of the generic connector makers have caught onto that too. (The one I bought works for audio, but claims to be incompatible for video.)
