First Earthquake!

Postby ed » Fri Jul 16, 2010 9:17 am

We had an earthquake this morning, my first one. We live about 5 miles from the epicenter. The bed actually moved across the floor! The news said there might be some after shocks in the next few days in the DC area.

Did you have any damage? It is quite a shock to be awaken with an earthquake. The last one we had the bed moved and my first thought was poltergeist, but when I jumped out of bed realized the floor was moving too! Here in the midwest there aren't many earthquakes. Is this the case too out East?

I could feel it all the way out here in California.

Oh, wait. I guess that was our own earthquake.

Just kidding.

Wow! A 3.6 that moved your bed across the floor?

Actually, it's surprising the places that get earthquakes. St. Louis actually sits on one of the biggest faults in the continental US! I even felt a wiggler in Ohio once.

I think we all need to ride out an earthquake, a hurricane or a tornado once in a while. Like a volcano in Iceland that knocks out airline traffic, it's a reminder of just how big and powerful Mother Nature is -- and that we haven't subdued her yet. (Though we've certainly caused our share of damage.)

We have a lot of tumblers here in california and they can be quite scarry at times, but there is nothing like a good old fashioned thunder and lighting storm close by to really scare the crap out of you.
