Need Help from Canada

Postby ridon127 » Mon Feb 18, 2008 10:19 pm

My little one is in Brownies and they are doing a project about different countries. Aleesia choose Canada. She needs to learn what girl scouts are called there, popular song, dance, story and a traditional food. She also needs photos to make a book. We thought about looking up all this online but figured it would be more realistic coming from an actual person. Any info would be appreciated. The food needs to be something that a group of 6 yr olds would like. (and easy to make)
Thank you for your help.

They're called the same thing in English. but Canada has two official languages, in French, its Guides du Canada.

popular song, dance or story... with six year olds? not sure about those... but food... that easy Poutine!!!!! It's basically Fries with Cheese curds and gravy. It's AWESOME although you would not want to eat this regularly... (If you eat it in a quiet room you can HEAR your arteries hardening!) Pretty easy to make. If you don't have cheese curds you can use grated cheese. More info here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine

Hello There Aleesia:

I'm not a Brownie ... but I am from Canada ... so I will try to help. Nice to see you have an interest in Canada where by
the way we all don't play Hockey or live in Igloos !!

I would suggest going to the website "www.girlguides.ca" ... you will find lots of information there.

Favourite Canadian Food for 6 Year Olds: (notice we spell favourite with a "u" in it ... same with the word colour).

Children in Canada enjoy a lot of the same foods as our neighbours to the South ... Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Kraft Dinner (do you know what that is? ... Noodles with Cheese), Hot Dogs, Hamburgers,
Spaghetti, have you ever heard of Shepherd's Pie ... Macaroni and Cheese, BBQ Beans, to name a few.

Good Luck with your project !! Debi Koebel, Hanover Ontario Canada (about 2 1/2 hours North West of Toronto)

We do so all play hockey! =;
At least, all the real Canadians do anyways. ;)

We used to all live in igloos, but with all this global warming, a lot of us find ourselves homeless.
One could say, great, all the more fresh air ....but that ain't necessarily so.
Oh well, as long as we can still gorge on maple syrop, life is still sweet.
aka. John.

So would our version be chili cheese fries? That's a popular dish in Tx.
I told her this morning some friends from Canada had responded to her post and she was so excited. You have to know this kid to understand her. She talks non stop 24/7. She is really funny and is totally clueless without a care in the world. Her favorite saying is, "Duh, I'm blonde."

So thanks for your help. Her project isn't sue for a couple of weeks, so that will give her time to put together a good report.

Something else that kids enjoy is Maple Syrup Snow Taffy. In the spring time when the syrup is boiling (sugaring off) and there is still snow on the ground, there is a great way to eat maple syrup. The warm maple syrup is poured on to the (clean) snow. It is poured into strips about six inched long. You then take a popsicle stick it stick it in one end and then proceed to roll the maple syrup (which is now slowly hardening) around the stick. When you are done you have a ball of semi hard maple syrup on one end. Simply lick it like a popsicle.

My wife's Uncle has his own sugar bush and when the entire French Canadian family gets together, the kids (and a few adults) really love the taffy (note the the adults also tend to add some to the rye:-D .

Here is a way to make it if you don’t have snow and a large boiling operation already in progress.

Norm,

When you say clean snow I assume that is in relation to Frank Zappa's warnings about yellow snow??

Well, yes, that would be one thing to look out for  . Finding snow in the forest among all the maple trees also means looking out for bits of bark and the like (which is really more of what I was implying).
