Creating Chrome Text

Postby Doreen L. » Wed Jan 30, 2008 11:21 pm

I wonder if anyone has had success doing this. What font did you use and how did you do it?

I've been playing around with this in Photoshop following some tutorials but my results haven't looked anywhere as good as those in the tutorials.

If you create the text in Photoshop Elements and then "simplify" the text layer, you can go to Filters and, under Sketch, apply the Chrome effect (which, of course, includes some customization features).

If you keep it a layered PSD file with no background layer, you can import it into Premiere Elements as a transparent graphic.

Does that help at all?

Hi Doreen,
Here's a way to do it using layer styles

I actually had tried that tutorial and mine was nowhere as smooth and shiney as the one he shows (I didn't have the font he was using). Maybe I'll just have to go back and play with the settings. I was hoping someone might have a tried and true way.

Steve - the problem with the chrome filter in Photoshop is that it doesn't really give you that very shiney look.

Thanks guys.

On the last episode of Phtoshop USer TV, Dave Cross did a tutorial on Chrome look. I believe he used layer adjustments (bevel and emboss, drop shadow and satin?) To get a nice shiny look he used the curves adjustment. You should check it out. It looked good. Which version of Photoshop do you have? He used CS3 and smart filters, but you may be able to do the same thing in CS2 but you may have to rasterize your type.

yes, You can subscribe to it in iTunes. or you can go to the NAPP (National Assoiscation of Photoshop Professionals) website and watch them there. For older episodes you have to pay if you're not a NAPP member, but the episodes they produce (weekly) are free for a few weeks and are FULL of great tutorials and tips.

Doreen,

Although there is no chrome text, the tutorial for gel text may look like chrome in shades of grey.

Plus the other tutorials may be of interest

After playing around with both tutorials, I got a better understanding of the functions used and was able to come up with something that I'm pleased with. Thanks guys for all your help.
