Talk about anything here.

Here's the Camcorderinfo press release:

and an unflattering review from Elura User:

I think instead of hoping for an HDV-to-HDD solution, I'm just going to wait for solid-state to come down a bit in price. It looks like the near future of video will be HD recorded in a higher bandwidth than HDV onto some kind of flash-type removable media like P2 or SxS.

You read the same press release I did :-D

Yes, unflattering but I'm more interested in a possible HD-7 replacement (and maybe a fixed OIS). I think you're right about the move to P2 or SxS cards. However, I think the format is most likely to be AVCHD and unlike Mr. Elura User I more interested in the "tired" HDV format than a heavily-compressed, difficult-to-edit flavour of MPEG4

The P2 uses Panasonic's proprietary .mxf format and the SxS uses a variant of Sony's XDCAM HD codec. Both are better than AVCHD when it comes to preserving image data, although neither is likely to appear in a $1000 palmcorder anytime soon. AVCHD recorded to SDHC looks like the direction for consumer cams; I don't like it either, but I suspect that manufacturers (both camcorder and software) will improve on it as the year goes on.

Bottom line: there are people like us who would use HDV-to-HDD camcorders right now, but the manufacturers don't think there are enough of us to make it worthwhile and they're probably right. Most consumers like the convenience of tapeless recording, and manufacturing a cam with an internal HDD costs more than one with a SDHC card slot. Most pros will eventually move to something like P2 or SxS. The next generation of professional NLEs will most likely take full advantage of 8-core workstations, and the new professional-grade cams will use better, less-compressed codecs than either HDV or AVCHD.
