Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereI use a desktop Windows PC for video/photo editing and everything else at home, but I've been toying with the idea of getting a laptop and it will need to be powerful enough for the same stuff. This makes me wonder what other people use for their photo/video projects.
Desktop: HPE-580T, i7-950 (3.07GHz), 16GB RAM, Win'7 64-bit Home Premium, PSE12/PRE12, Lightroom 5.
Laptop: MacBook Pro (retina), 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5. Cameras (in use): Panasonic GH4/Canon HFR400/Canon HV30, GoPro HD Hero2.
Re: Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereRon, I use both for video editing. I love my laptop. It is really powerful and works as well as my desktop. The only downside for me is the relatively small screen. I have 2 23" screens attached to my desktop. So if I have a big project I use my desktop.
A) i7-3930K 3.2GHz (3.8GHz Turbo), 32GB DDR3-1600, SSD 256GB, 2x1TB+2x2TB Seagate Barracuda (72krpm), Geforce GTX 550 Ti (1GB), Win10 Pro 64-bit
B) Sony Vaio i7-3632QM,12gb DDR3-1333MHz, GeForce® GT 640M LE (2GB), 750GB (7200rpm), Win10 Pro64-bit
Re: Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereDesktop as per my sig. for everything. I also have an old laptop but that only used to stream UK TV content (Italian TV is pretty dire! )
AMD Ryzen 3900x 12C/24T, ASUS x570 mobo, Arctic Liquid Freezer ll 280, Win11 64 bit, 64GB RAM, Radeon RX 570 graphics, Samsung 500GB NVMe 980 PRO (C:), Samsung 970 Evo SSD (D:), Dell U2717D Monitor, Synology DS412+ 8TB NAS, Adobe CS6.
Re: Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereFor photo/video projects, I use my desktop exclusively. For photographs, I use a color managed workflow and have calibrated IPS monitors. I use Premiere Pro CS6 and After Effects CS6 for video. My video card supports cuda gpu acceleration and I have an ssd boot drive, 3 internal 7200 rpm hard drives, and a Wacom Intuos tablet.
I have a laptop and a tablet, but I use those for other things. I could use the laptop for photo/video in a pinch, but the responsiveness would be far less then my desktop and the standard tn panel, while calibrated, is sensitive to viewing angle so it's not well suited for precise color correction.
Re: Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereUse exclusively my desktop for photo/viedo-editing; infact this is the only task done on the desktop. The laptop is used for mail, facebook, internet etc.

Re: Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereDesktop machine in sig is the only one that I use for video editing. I also have a Dell Studio 1558 laptop that has a few years on it that I used to use for some editing but not anymore. It's capable, but I no longer need to so I don't. I've found that especially as my eyes age I much prefer using a desktop monitor, and the performance factor makes the desktop so much less frustrating. My next laptop will be an inexpensive one, with no intent of using it for editing.
Be yourself; everyone else is taken.
Asus X570-E motherboard; AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 3.8 GHz; 64GB DDR4; GeForce RTX 2060 6GB; 1TB Samsung 970 Pro M.2 SSD
Re: Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereMy editing machine runs W7 Pro on an i7 3.3GHz Hex Core with hyperthreading. 1 X 1TB for Windows and programs, 2 X 1TB Raid 0 for Media and Projects, 2 X 1TB Raid 0 for Previews, Cache, and Exports, and 2TB for backups. GTX660Ti with CUDA. IPS monitor, not calibrated.
I only load the media I need for projects in progress on this machine. All of my media (video, motion backgrounds, music, etc.) is stored on my other machine and external drives. My other machine (which I can use for video, but don't unless the other machine is down) is W7 Pro on an i7 Quad Core 3.4 GHZ (no hyperthreading). 1TB for Windows and programs, 1TB Media, 1TB My Documents, 1TB Previews, Cache, Exports, 2TB Backups. GTX 560Ti with CUDA. TN monitor, not calibrated. I've never used a laptop for video editing.
Re: Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereI don't know how anyone edits on less than a desktop with high-res monitor.
I've got a quad core processor and twin monitors and I STILL feel boxed in sometimes! HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Re: Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereAlthough I do a lot of editing on my desktop I am starting to do much more on my Lenovo Thinkpad laptop.
When my video desktop dies it will not be replaced as I will just use the laptop. I do have a docking station connected to two monitors so that my laptop is like a desktop when needed and also portable 1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.
2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Re: Curious about desktop vs laptop usage hereI love my laptop but Lenovo isn't making the 17" anymore. I especially love the built in Wacom.
When I was shopping I also looked at Sager: https://www.xoticpc.com/custom-gaming-laptops-notebooks-clevo-sager-notebooks-ct-95_51_162.html Lenovo W70l; 1.6 GHz, i7 quad core, Win 7, 64 bit, 16 gigs DDR-3 RAM; NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800; Two 1T 7200 internal drives; BluRay burner
