Go Pro camera - which recording file type?My son in law is going to hike a famous, rugged trail. I'm going to buy him a Go Pro. I work in a CSS 5.5 video editor. What file type should I ask him to shoot in? He hasn't gotten the camera yet. I love working with AVCHD.

Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type? You can't go wrong with AVCHD, particularly if you're working with an older version of Premiere Pro.
HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type? Are you saying that AVCHD is a standard option on Go Pro cams?

Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type? What GoPro Model? Starting with the 5 model they have the ability to record in 4k 60fps HEVC codec but you will need to use hand brake to convert the files to mpeg4 for CS 5.5.
If there is alot of movement then the HEVC at 60fps makes sense as you can slow the footage down. If you are using the new 8 GoPro you can shoot in 4k MPEG 4 with the stabilization on and you should get some really smooth footage. I like shooting in 4k but just be aware it is a little taking on the editing system. Sidd "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." ..... Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type?Sidd, that's the kind of feedback I need. Many thanks. I don't want to have to use an additional converter. I want to pop the footage on a timeline and have at it.

Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type?Well if it is within your budget the 8 series is the best.
Record in 4k at 30fps MPEG4 with stabilization on and you will get some great footage. Just be aware that stabilization is reduced in low light settings. This is due to the difficulty the camera has in recognizing the background to stabilize the footage. Also right now GoPro has $50 off on the 8 series. Sidd "Life moves pretty fast. Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type? So, Sidd, are you saying Go Pro is special because (1) "If you are using the new 8 GoPro you can shoot in 4k MPEG 4 with the stabilization on" and (2) I can plop that footage right into CSS 5.5?

Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type?Yes, your criteria is a rugged camera = GoPro
1. Edit in MPEG4 2. Stabilization I think that the GoPro 8 best meets your needs. The best quality is that the stabilization is outstanding which is key to good footage. The DJI Osmo action is also good but to get that stabilization the camera has to zoom in quite a bit more than the GoPro. So in my estimation the GoPro has a wider field of view. Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type? That is a very intelligent answer and I appreciate it, Sidd.
Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type?Okay, Sidd, after reviewing lots of pros and cons, I'm going with your recommendation to get a GoPro 8.

Re: Go Pro camera - which recording file type?I think you will really enjoy the camera. I also saw on amazon that the camera that is $50.00 off also comes with a free high speed 258 gb SD card.
