AV enthusiast

When I was in middle school and high school, the av kids were all stereotyped as nerds with thick black-rim glasses with electrical tape holding them together, pushing the projectors around the halls.

All the mean kids picked on them, at least where I went to school. ( I promise, I was never one of the bullies. I was more of a space cadet .) But I wish I had started learning about this stuff back then.

Those 'nerdy' kids grew up to be the ones who have guided the evolution of this audio and video technology, to where it is today.

Completely empowering, if you are willing to learn how to use it.

My name is Kent aka Doc, and I'm from Minnesota.

I am an amateur songwriter (my way of expressing myself), and I really want to make cool videos for my songs.

I hope to be able to glean, not just the technical details, but also some of the more artistic, aesthetic aspects of filmmaking, as well as the necessary workflow type routines.

Thus, I've taught myself audio engineering, music composition, lyric writing, and now...video editing with VMSP11. I tried Premiere, and CyberLink Power Director, but I prefer Vegas for several reasons.

My songs/videos will mostly be, on my first album anyway, personal experiences, friends, lovers, haters, peeves, that kinda thing.

After that, I'm not sure which way I'll go.

Hi Doc,
Great to have you hang out here with the rest of us video nerds :meet:
I remember the same things about the AV guys at school of which I wanted to be one but wasn't.
Didn't pick on them either.

My family and I lived in Minnesota for a little over 20 years, 3 of our 4 kids were born there. We pretty much have covered the state at one time or another, Duluth to Worthington, Detroit Lakes to Albert Lea, Fargo/Grand Forks, Alexandria and beyond.
We lived in Morris then moved to Barrett and Elbow Lake, then Eagan and Apple Valley, we loved it there but have come to love Georgia too.

Been in Georgia for 12 years now, yes there is life after Minnesota and I have learned to live without my snowmobile :(

There are a few other regulars from Minnesota, we even had a meet up there at the Mall of America a few years ago.
Had about 6 or 8 people show up from as far away as Rochester and even Eau Claire, Wi.

So what part of the state are you in? We hope to get back there again for another meet up at the Napa Grill :)

I'm sure that any questions you may need answered to get your videos done you will find the answers here.
Our products section (with lots of free stuff by the way) has some really great stuff that helps give videos that professional touch.
If you need anything there is almost always someone around to lend a hand.

All the best,
Chuck

Welcome, Doc! When I started at the University of Bridgeport (CT) in 1984, I was the only cinema freshman who wasn't there because they wanted to make music videos. Most of them were disappointed because we were "only" allowed to use 16mm cameras, not video equipment. Looking forward to seeing some of your work!

The music for my songs are in various stages of completion, with 3 ready to go (ready to be performed, recorded, filmed, edited, etc).

But for my music videos, I want them to be professionally done, and I don't plan to release anything until they are. However, the type of music videos I am thinking about are like a short story type film, with occasional shots of the musicians thrown in. I have vague ideas of the video stories I want for each song, but the process is not much further than that.

3 books I'm digesting, besides Steve Grisetti's VMSP11 book are:

* Shut Up and Shoot - Artis
* Shoot Video That Doesn't Suck - Stockman

and

* Make Your Music Video and Put It Online - Safir

I hope that by the time I've read those, I'll have a much clearer picture (no pun inteded) of what needs to be done.

Have you seen Stockman's website? A few good tips.
