Strange Graphics

Postby Cope This 719 » Thu Jan 05, 2012 4:44 am

This question is perhaps out of our range but I'm getting desperate.

My problem is that I have up to 2000 JPEG images on a hard drive. Some of these appear quiet normal in Thumb Nail mode however upon opening they are distorted with rectangles blocking out parts of the original. I have tried these images on another computer without success. I have recently installed Irfan View viewer without any success.

Has anyone had this happen to them and is there a solution.

Happy New Year Everybody
John

Hi John. Your description of "parts of the image are distorted with rectangles blocking out part of the originals" suggests the files may be corrupted.

I'll PM you my email address so that perhaps you can send a couple of images so I can see what you mean.

And can you clarify what you mean by "in Thumb Nail mode"?

Do you mean in the Organizer or in Windows or in the OSX Finder?

When you open them in Photoshop/Photo Elements, do they still look corrupted?

Good Morning Steve,
What I called Thumbnail are called large or medium icons in Windows Explorer. The corruption occurs in viewing the following pictures. In Windows Explorer under Small Icons pictures are O.K. In Medium and Large Icons the corruption is again evident. When I drag the files from my DVD Backup to where the corrupt files are located no problems perfect image. When I Add corrupt files in PE 7 the corruption is still there but can be placed into time line that runs perfectly.

Do you know of a program available at http://speedmaxpc.com that corrects corrupt files. I am contemplating getting it. Do you know this program or one similar that will correct my problem.

Thanks John

Hi John. Thanks for the pics that you sent to me. I can see now what the problem is and it is as I suspected, corrupted files. As you describe, when viewing the images as small icons the icon image is OK but using medium or large icons and the corruption that is present in the full image can be seen in the icon.

I had this same problem a few years ago on a flash based camera. Because I still had the pics on the flash card I was able to recover them using the SanDisk Rescue software. This doesn't work with images on a hard drive (I tried it on the images that you sent to me). Other than a Google trawl for other photo recovery tools I am sorry that I cannot be of more help.

I hope that you don't mind that I have posted a couple of samples of your problem pics here - it may help others to suggest a solution.
