Safely Remove USB Drive Utillity not working.

Postby Gerlinde » Fri Aug 12, 2011 1:35 pm

I have a couple of Seagate External USB drives and I have run into the problem, that they can not be removed after use, because a file(s) is still in use. Even waiting for a while after closing all files the message persists. Currently I have that problem with my FreeAgent Go drive on my notebook. But I run into this at various times also on my XP desktop.
Does anyone know a solution for that? I shut down the computer and disconnect, but I hate to do that.

Hi Gerlinde,
One reason for this I know is that the drive has a Paging File set up on it.
If you know where to look to see if the drive has a paging file (under My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Performance Settings/Advanced Tab)
You can select "No Paging File" for that drive and it will resolve at least some of the problem.

I still get the same message sometimes on a number of external drives, sometimes when I try it again a few seconds later it lets me disconnect. If it continues I will usually just pull the USB plug anyway (not necessarily a recommended solution for everyone).

Thanks Chuck, I will check that out. I did some research in the meantime, and I found that as long as your external drive has the option for Quick removal checked, you can just simply unplug it and don't have to use the removal utility. That is for Windows 7. The drive has to be connected and you go to Device Manager > drives > right click your USB drive > Properties > Policies Tab.

Make sure to close all explorer windows. This is usually what hangs me up. I have a folder on the external drive open in an explorer window.

Do you have "Everything?" You may have to kill that it the task manager.

There may be other processes that are trying to index files on the external drives. You will have to wait for those to finish or else you'll have to restart Windows.
