Bad discs?

Postby momoffduty » Thu Jul 07, 2011 9:32 am

I've had bad burns with a stack of DVD-R. A few months ago I purchased a 50 cake of Verbatim DVD-R inkjet printable (not hub) and had lots of bad burns via Nero. The odd thing is that this cake had no logo. The 50 cake I purchased before that did. Thought it was a bad cake so ordered another 50 and a 50 cake of CD-R. They did not have the logo either. Sent it back and asked about it, but they are sending me another cake of the DVD-R, but not the CD since I used a few. The photo on the website does show the logo, but that could just be a stock image.

Since the seller would not comment about the logo I opened a case with Verbatim and they requested photos, but have not heard back since.

Has anyone purchased Verbatim that did not have the logo?

Where did you purchase these from Cheryl?

Sounds like they are selling cheap media and saying it is Verbatim.
There should always be a logo and if there isn't they should take them back, even if you have used a few.
Any reputable store should do that.

I purchase my media (Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden) from Supermediastore.com in 50 or 100 packs and it always has the original shrink wrap with logo/manufacturer info or a label with such. I agree with Chuck that the source is questionable.

They were purchased from SuperMediaStore. They won't take back any that have some used, which I did use a couple of the CDs. I have bought discs there for several years. The lightscribe are in the shrink wrap, the others are not. Have also purchases 2 cases of DVD cases.

I can't believe that they would be pulling a switcheroo on you Cheryl. There's something else going on here.

Download DVD Identifier to find out the real manufacturer of the discs:
(Don't download the database- you don't need it if you connect to the internet.)

Cheryl, my Verbatim's manufacturer is reported by DVD Indentifier as being Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. What does it say about yours?

It shows the packaging and the disc with no logo. Thought maybe someone else bought this cake and theirs had a logo. The first batch did (not shown) and this is the second & third cakes.

I don't quite understand. I see the "V" logo on the labels. These look just like mine when I buy the cake box. Are you saying that you've seen some with the logo on the discs themselves? I've never seen that. I'm confused. :???:

Yes, the first cake of discs had the Verbatim spelled out on the hub. I just ran the Dvd Identifier on a few more discs and the drive won't recognize (initialize) the discs with that error in the identifier. Tried on 2 drives. These were bad burn discs that I saved.

In that case it does sound like bad discs, but they're probably not pulling a fast one - it may just be a bad run. I would certainly hope that SMS should stand behind this and offer you a refund. If it were me I'd stay away from the Verbatim from SMS for a while. If Verbatim has had a bad run of these they'll know it pretty soon. For my personal projects I've been using Taiyo Yuden, but lately I've been using Verbatim because a third party is purchasing them for the church marketing DVD that we're producing. Come to think of it they did not come from SMS, however.

The last 8x hub printable Verbatims that I bought from SMS did have "Verbatim" stamped on the hub.
I switched to Taiyo Yuden hub printable so that I didn't have to put the disc in the printer tray "just right" to get the name on the hub aligned straight and not upside down compared to the disc's graphics.

I suspect that somebody may have put the wrong discs in the wrong spot in their warehouse.

Did you try a blank disc with DVD Identifier?
