NTSC, PAL, and QuickTime question

Postby Ron Hunter » Tue Dec 14, 2010 11:42 am

I recently produced an 11min video using my HV30 camcorder. The HDV footage was sent to the computer as HDV, and the output movie was QuickTime in a YouTube friendly format.

Now my friends in the UK want to see this, and I'm wondering if NTSC/PAL makes a difference with a QuickTime movie. Can someone kindly explain this situation for me?

Thank you!

How are you going to deliver the video to them Ron? If it is on DVD it really won't matter as most in the UK can play both NTSC and PAL without problems (not the case here unfortunately). If it is a video posted on YouTube, Vimeo or in our Gallery here it won't make a difference either.

Thanks Chuck! I am planning to share the QuickTime MOV file with them, so that feels safe, yes?

But how are you going to deliver to them, Ron?

If via YouTube or online, there will also not be a compatibility issue.

AFAIK .MOV files (and indeed most computer files) are not encoded to PAL/NTSC formats but rather their own colour spaces. Given that most domestic players won't play .MOV files directly they will be being played on a PC - so there won't be compatibility issues (apart from the usual ones!).

I transferred the QuickTime file over our internal network.

If they are going to watch it on a computer, all they need is to have Quicktime Player installed. There is no NTSC or PAL issue to deal with in this case. It's just a computer format file.
