Problem with video editor jamming adding zooming keyframes

Postby munk Miikael » Mon Jan 04, 2021 4:46 pm

Dear Steve, Ron, Chuck, Sidd and others,

Happy New Year 2021!

And thank you again for your support! I have included the muvipix logo in all the recent simple videos I have put together. Some issues are coming up and looking at the subscription videos, I was not able to find an answer, therefore I ask:

when I start zooming in an out videos, the program eventually gets very slow and finally, sometimes, stops responding completely and/or crashes. The same with pictures. I wonder is that because the computer is not fast enough or is there something I could change in the settings to economize the available resources better. I did put a lot of panning and zooming into this particular video, so I wonder whether I overburdened the program. Maybe adding the 2160p clips was too much for it to stomach? I was looking up the subscription videos, but could not find the answer. (please point out the correct tutorial video to look at if there is one, if possible) I also notice things like that when I add text in the videos, the preview runs smoothly, but as soon as I add transitions at the beginning and end of text clips, the preview slows down very much and starts jumping and stopping. Now I discovered that when I simply choose the option "Fade in and Out Video" on every text clip, the program does not slow down, so in that sense the problem was solved. But still I wonder if the computer is simply too slow or is there something that could be changed. The idea with zooming in and out videos was partly this that with the Nicon W300 compact camera I am able to shoot at 4k/2180p and I thought that then I could later in the Premiere Elements Editor zoom in on distant objects, such as the deer at the edge of the forest, and get a clearer picture than I would with shooting 1080p. Not sure whether it really looks better that way, though.

I add here all the settings and the screenshots which I took just at the moments when the program crashed. I noticed that if I started dragging the videos and pictures manually from the edges and moving them around or zooming in and out, the program slowed down very much or crashed, but when I entered the numerical values in the Scale and Position boxes at the Applied Effects-Motion-Keyframes panel, it worked without jamming. Only that this made it more complicated and tedious to work.

Another thing I wonder about is whether it is possible to tune down or turn off the background noise in audio clips? The camera I use is watertight with a built-in-microphone, therefore the audio suffers as a result and has a buzzing noise to it, as you can hear.

Thank you!

Whenever you see a yellow-orange render line along the top of your timeline, it's wise to press the Enter key and let the program render your preview. Keeping that yellow line green will stabilize things a bit.

But if you're still experiencing an unstable timeline and crashes, there could be a mismatch between your videos and your project settings. Ideally you should not see a yellow-orange line above your video clips until you add effects to your videos. I see that yellow orange above every video clip on your timeline -- which could overtax your computer.

munk Miikael the other thing I noticed is that the video length is really long for one project. And, you system might not be able to handle such a large project. I would suggest editing / condensing each clip down to the video you want. Output those files individually then combine those completed files into one project and edit that. To edit such a big project requires a really advanced machine.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I will try it out. It seems it was as I guessed - I demanded too much from the computer. But that is partially why I did this long video, to try out how much the computer is capable of.

Do I understand you correctly that whenever I add a video clip which is not compatible with the project settings - say, the settings is 1080p and I add some clips that are 4K and some that are 480p - it uses up the resources?

And another question - when I film something that is 2160p and then crop out of it an area - like a deer in the distance - then the resolution will be better than when I film and crop the same distant object in 1080p?

greetings and thanks,

Whenever your video format does not match your project settings and whenever you make adjustments to the video or effects to it, the program must soft render it -- a process that can take resources.

Rendering your timeline (by pressing the Enter key) creates a hard render so that the program no longer has to create soft renders, meaning it uses less resources.

Thank you very much! I will take it into account and try it out.
Excuse a foolish question from a fool :ha: - is it generally speaking like this that when I add larger clips and pictures (higher quality, bigger file size) to the project, it uses up the resources? Like now I have a 1 hour MOV 1080p 60 fps, so I thought that before starting working on it it would be more wiser to render it into mp4 30fps. Which is what I did and the file size went down from 11GB to 3GB. Are those the kind of things that help save resources?

Actually converting video to a format that makes it smaller compresses it more and actually makes it MORE resource heavy.

Not much. But smaller files don't necessarily mean less resources.

Thank you! Well that was certainly news. What about the photos - if I use a 7MB picture, would it work faster if I resized it to a smaller size/resolution, so that it would be, say, 1MB?
Would you like to make a short video about how generally to save resources? I am sure I would not be the only one who would appreciate it. I have been looking at other videos and tips and haven't found exactly those things.

You need to use pixel dimensions (like 1920 X 1080), not MB, when referring to video size.

Usually the pictures I take are 3456 x 4608. Does resizing them and making them smaller before inserting them into the program make the program use significantly less resources?

OK, thanks to all that replied! I followed Steve's advice of rendering everything and that helped. Also Sidd's advice of doing video by sections is probably wise. Now I noticed that when I add, say, 15 pictures 3456 x 4608 7 MB each and start editing them, the program starts lagging. But when I make them smaller, 80% quality compression, ca 500KB each 2309 x 1732 resolution and add them then into the program, it works fine without much lagging, and I don't notice much worse quality.

Does Steve have all those kinds of tips nicely indexed in his book? I am starting to consider buying it, instead of searching for the right videos with answers or writing questions in the forum that I could easily find answers for in the book myself (provided if I could)
