One Hit Wonders!

Postby ed » Thu Oct 29, 2020 2:00 pm

I've loved one hit wonders since I was a kid. I've been collecting 45's of them that I've found in thrift stores, although they are hard to find. I also still had a couple from when I was a kid. I like 60's-70's genre.

Here's what I have to date:

They're coming to take me away HA-HAAA! - Napoleon XIV
The Eggplant That Ate Chicago - Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band
I'm Gonna Knock on Your Door - Eddie Hodges
Romeo's Tune - Steve Forbet
Sometimes When We Touch - Dan Hill
Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas
Which Way You Goin' Billy? - The Poppy Family
Pac-Man Fever - Buckner & Garcia
United We Stand - The Brotherhood of Man
Worst That Could Happen - Brooklyn Bridge
Happy Days - Pratt & McClain
Sky High - Jigsaw
99 Luftballons - Nena
It Never Rains in Southern California - Albert Hammond
Seasins In The Sun - Terry Jacks
Last Song - Edward Bear
Escape - Rupert Holmes
Don't Worry Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin
Undercover Angel - Alan O'Day
Shannon - Henry Gross

I saw him open for Fleetwood Mac. I think it was 1979 at the Capital Center.

Ed, if you haven't read this book, I highly recommend it. I actually wrote to the author after reading this and his follow-up ("Blinded by the Lyrics") because I loved his writing so much.

Thanks Steve! I just ordered a used copy of the book, it has a lot of good reviews and I can't wait to read it. I love reading books about music history and musician biography.

I haven't heard your one hit wonder before. Here's one from Baltimore's own The Peppermint Rainbow.

I am just loving this discussion!

And thanks for the "Spinal Tap" link, Sidd. Nobody delivered a throwaway line like Fred Willard!

It also made me curious. Turns out Four Jacks and a Jill were actually South African!

Which for no apparent reason reminded me of this Dutch one hit wonder and one of the weirdest performance videos of all time.

I love that song Steve remember it well. I would love to come across the 45. I also wish fashion would go back to those times! I would rock that look!

Here's one I remember from my childhood. My older brother set up a huge wire antenna on our roof to capture AM radio broadcasts across half the US. I remember lying in bed listening to this one when he was messing with his radio.

I love this topic !! I have all of the songs posted so far on my trusty iPod. Great list of songs.
My favorites of those listed so far have got to be "Which Way You Goin Billy" and "How Do You Do".

Probably my favorite one hit wonder of all time is a cover by Garland Jeffreys of the original by ? and the Mysterians - 96 Tears

That's a good one Chuck. It seems to me what these songs have in common are simple catchy melodies. I'll post another when I log into work later today, with a story.

From my list.

My cousin Michael is like a brother to me, we are 10 months apart in age and I spent a lot of time at his house. One Saturday I was there for the weekend and my uncle, who spent at least half the year on travel was coming home. He called and told us to stack up the firewood that was delivered that day. Of course we didn't do that, and when he came home about 1:30 AM he threw water in our faces while we were asleep and told us to get out and stack that wood. We were listening to the radio before we went to sleep that night and laughed about this song.

Not technically Chuck. He passed about 30 years ago, way to soon.

Post a song and tell us a radio day story. I'm sure you have a lot of good ones to tell.
