We had a really rare lightening storm pass through early this morning.

Beautiful work Sidd! Though the thunder did sound a bit like stock sound effects. Or is that just how California thunder sounds?

Good call Steve. Drones do not record any audio so I did add an audio track.

Great storm shots Sidd! Love the colors in the 2nd one.

Thanks Mom I liked that second shot too. It was just so unexpected to get a lightning storm. They are rare around here especially this time of year.

I really liked the edit on this one. It seems like catching lightning on video would be difficult, like fireworks, but maybe not as much so. I'm impressed with the way this turned out. It worked well for you that the storm was in the distance instead of on top of you, but close enough to get these shots. Lightning is a way of life in Ohio, but usually it means finding shelter instead of reaching for a recording device :)

Thanks Dave for me lightning always meant get shelter. We were always taught that once you see the flash of light start counting until you hear the thunder and you can get an approximation of how far away it is. Then you can tell on the next flash of light if the storm is moving closer or away.

But in this case It appeared to be moving away and there was no rain... but it recording with a drone did go against the grain.

Glad you liked the video it was really fun to make. What I did was to export a jpeg for every lightning strike the inset it in so you can see the strikes for a bit longer. I was especially happy with the strikes that occurred during the sunrise towards the end of the video.

The audio could be used in the next Dark Shadows movie !

When I was watching the video the audio (music and thunder) reminded me of an old TV show which they have made a few movies from (Dark Shadows). Also would go well on something like the Alan Parson's Project album Tales of Mystery and Imagination Edgar Allen Poe.

Just as a quick follow up. This lightning storm that I recorded is what is responsible for the huge fires burning across northern California right now. Did not realize at the time how deadly this would become. The fires have burned over 2 million acres. To give you some perspective the area burned is 10 times bigger that Manhattan, or almost have of the island of Maui.

Even today 3 weeks later the smoke is so high in the air and there is so much the sky looks an errie orange for most of the day. Feels like we live on Mars

Remember the Twilight Zone where six square city blocks were removed to another planet? Well...

But seriously, thoughts are with everyone affected by this. Devastating and life changing.

Talking about smoke and fires, here's a good web site to bookmark. Just type in your zip code or city/state to get info on air quality, smoke, fires, etc.:
