SD cards won't come up

Postby BuddyB » Wed May 20, 2020 10:28 pm

..in Windows Explorer. I bought two new ones, an ONN. 64gig and a SanDisk 32 gig; neither will show. The old PNY shows. Any ideas? Thanks.

Peru does each card have its own reader, or does the Win system have a reader that generally applies to any card you stick in? So far I haven't found anything that will help.

Is it an internal or external card reader?

Also: Does the reader or card appear in Disk Management?

It's the external HD with SD card slot. But they won't come up on the laptop either. One of my old SD cards (2gigs) will work. And the USB load-up sound comes on as well on the 2 gig. One sound for the HD plug, then a second sound for the SD card.

Are both those cards sdxc? The 64 gb one is. 32 gb could be sdhc or sdxc. I suspect your card readers are old enough that they don't support sdxc.

Solution 4. Update the SD Card Driver
Applies To: SD is not working error

Go to Device Manager, here you will see the card reader in the list. If it has a yellow sign beside it, the problem is most probably caused by a driver issue. Then you need to update the driver. Here's how to do:

Step 1:Connect the SD card to the PC
Step 2:Navigate Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Disk drivers.
Step 3:Find and right-click on the SD card, and first choose "Uninstall" and then choose "Scan for hardware changes" to refresh the drivers.

This is from the following page: https://www.easeus.com/data-recovery-so ... html#part4

Check the device manager and driver update as Sidd suggested earlier, that will hopefully fix the issue Bob mentions above with the sdxc cards.

You are absolutely correct. The ONN is SDXC and the SanDisk is SDHC, don't see XC anywhere on the packaging. Do you think Microsoft would have an updated card reader? I have set my Win10/64 for auto upgrades to the op system; thought that would have been included. Chuck I will do that thanks.

I did a delete, and scanned. It put the same one in and said it was the latest. Not sure how to proceed from here, but suppose I'll try going to the card mfg and see if I can get anything there. :ha:

Hi Buddy,

It might be worth it to just get a decent card reader, they are not very expensive and should solve your problem. If not you can return it, Amazon is really good about that.

SDissue.png
Chuck this is interesting. The SD card slot went out on my computer. Peru recommended I purchase a USB reader with with SD Slots, pic included. When I went to Amazon there are a bunch; all saying SDHC and SDXC. The one I bought does not open them. I get the activation sound, from the computer, for the reader but not the card and it doesn't show. When I put an old 2 gig card in I get the activation for both and the card shows. And they all says SDHC and XC, so I'm a bit reticent about purchasing another. :ha:
PS: When you mentioned that I didn't realize that was what I purchased. And the one you see is on Amazon. Ugh

When you plug in the reader with the new card check to see if the computer is recognizing it. Computer Management > Disk Management, it should show up there. You might see an error, the card may not be formatted or it may be trying to take a drive letter that is already taken. The below link may help if there are errors.
