Naming Files

Postby John Walker » Tue Mar 03, 2020 8:46 pm

Hi all,

I am about to work on a large project. In the past, I've not needed to rename the clips as the projects have been fairly small.

With this new project, I want to group clips by file name. ie, For instance, all clips relating to High Street, I would like to name them HighStreet 1, High Street 2 etc. How do you other members usually do this?

Do you rename files in Windows prior to download or within PRE 2018 - or is there a better way ?

Regards

John

At what point are you renaming them, John?

If you're renaming them as you download them from your camcorder, you can just use Premiere Elements' built-in Video Importer. You give the batch a name ("HighStreet" for instance) and, as the program copies the files to your hard drive, it will automatically name them HighStreet 1, HighStreet 2, etc.

I would also suggest that you just create a folder and call it highstreet. Then place the appropriate clips in that folder. That way when you want clips you just look for the appropriate folder and select the relevant clip.

Thank you Steve and Sidd,

This project wasn't planned from the off but has just grown. It's a big jumble of clips taken at different times but many of the same general locations in similar weather ie. High Street, Park, River Trips etc etc. So, unfortunately, I'm too late for your suggestion Steve. Worth knowing for the future though.

I felt that to make some sense of it, I needed to add titles rather than just a file number. The unknown is whether it's better to change the file name in Windows or once the clips are loaded into PRE.

Perhaps your suggestion Sidd is the better way for me to go - no renaming required.

Thanks

John

I'd change the name in Windows File Explorer. That way the change is permanent.
