When Discs Go Bad...

Postby Dave McElderry » Sat Jan 25, 2020 1:47 pm

My wife and I were going through some old DVDs the other day, watching some things that I had created some years ago. One of the discs refused to load on the DVD player. Later I tried it on the computer and it doesn't work there, either. Examining the disc I see no obvious physical damage, scratches, or other issues. I did try a gentle cleaning. At that point I thought I'd burn a new disc from my saved project. Unfortunately, I can't locate it. I either deleted the project when it was finished (very unlike me) or it's lost in a filing system or naming mistake.

I was wondering if anyone knows of software which might be able to salvage the files from the disc to create another disc, or I'm open to suggestions.

Dave, can you view the disc at all? I know it won't play but can you open it in file explorer and see what's on it? Do you have another DVD player you could test it on? Do you have VLC Media Player? So many questions, so little time ::C

Thanks for the reply Chuck. After my post I got the idea of using Nero Essentials to do a disc copy. I figured I wouldn't be out anything except the cost of a BD-R (yes, it was a Blu-ray, not a DVD, but that had nothing to do with the inability to play it. Both the player and the computer writer were DVD/BD). Much to my joy, the copied disc works, even though the original doesn't. Problem solved. I appreciate the response. :exc:

Always cool when you can get the problem solved. I am always hesitant to use DVD's for long tern

Good news Dave that you were able to copy and the copied played. I have a ton of DVDs of old projects and in another 10 years will anyone have a DVD player?

My spare DVD player will be on the same shelf as my dual cassette player, VHS player, turntable, and my collection of Windows 7, XP, Vista, and ME computers. ;)

I still have some pet dinosaur food left over that I just can’t bring myself to throw away.
