HEIC format

HEIC format

Postby bobfranz » Thu Oct 31, 2019 1:38 pm

My iPhone XR uses the HEIC photo format which has to be converted to JPEG to work in PRE18. So I'm doing that conversion on my MAC. But it's tedious (1700 photos from a recent trip). I notice PRE20 Mac accepts HEIC but my MAC isn't my primary photo editing platform (PC).

I figured out that I can change a setting on the XR to save photos in JPEG but it looks like that disables some (video) slo-mo and 4K features.

The options at this point are hard to accept when things worked so efficiently with the JPEG format as the standard. Is HEIC the future standard format?

You should be able to work with HEIF on Windows or Mac in version 2020. At least once you've installed this Windows patch.

Thanks. Will 2020 allow a batch conversion to JPEG?

If you're asking about a batch conversion from HEIF, I don't know. You can download the free trial and give it a try.

And if you do, please report back. It would be a good thing to know!

I discovered (by accident) that my Macbook Pro (Photos ap) will do the batch conversions so I used that. Oddly, my internet search had said the conversion needed to be done in the "Preview" ap on a Mac. Preview converts only 10 at a time, so that was tedious as I did 200+ photo conversions before discovering "Photos" will convert as many as desired.

P.S. I think it's rude for Apple to make this change to HEIC and require these additional steps. In my case it added several days to the process of organizing my trip photos. And I'm retired with plenty of time!

Sometimes I wonder if Microsoft's and Apple's "improvements" actually make things better.

Upon further review...
Apparently the iCloud storage of these photos (HEIC) includes a jpeg version of the same photo. So that's easy to deal with for what I am doing.

After my recent trip I was working with the photos that had automatically downloaded to my Mac. Those were HEIC format only.

It's still not clear where we are going in the future but for now there is an easier solution than I thought.

HEIF images load faster and take up less space on a server. Unlike the JPEG format, which only supports still images, HEIC files can contain a sequence of images just like a GIF file. HEIC files also support 4K, 3D, and transparency, and they can be rotated or cropped with ease
