Resizing

Specific to Premiere Elements version 15

Ah, sorry. Before I output, the pics are blurry as the CTI moves over them but clear when CTI not moving. However, after outputting to hard drive as MP4 H.264, all pics remain blurry.

Can you post a sample of your slideshow to YouTube or Vimeo and a link to it on this forum so we can see this quality issue ourselves?

Looks like my reply disappeared. When still working in Elements, the pics are blurry as CTI moves over them but are clear when CTI is stationary. After I output the video to hard drive as Steve suggested, and then play the video, the pics are all blurry.

Here is the link, this is a short trial. Please ignore the audio, I was trying to learn Beat Detect. There are just a few pics that are repeated.

Some of those pictures looked pretty good. What are you most concerned about?

BTW, please confirm the length and height of the photo (in pixels) and the project settings for your Premiere Elements project.

I also think that they look OK except for the picture that you have zoomed in on.

For that image it looks like you might have zoomed in on the timeline image. To make that one work better you should try cropping it from the original picture and using that cropped picture as a new image on the timeline.

Boy, I'm really surprised you both think these pics look ok. I'm using a 27 inch Retina display Mac and they look pretty bad, and even worse on larger TV screen. The pics are nowhere near as clear as the original scanned image, nor nowhere near as clear using Photoshop Create Slideshow.
Here are all the properties I can find: for first pic in slide show, Image size 1000 x 675 pixels, file size 555.91KB and Pixel aspect ratio 1.0.
For second pic, image size is 1000 x 750 pixels, file size is 660.74 KB and same pixel aspect ratio.
For the next pic that was zoomed in on, I used Motion and scaled up from 100.0 to 173.2

I let the program automatically set the project settings, and cannot figure out how to check what these are, even though I checked Steve's book. Help with this please?

I am jumping in a bit late....

But what are your project settings in PRE 15 that you are using?

If HD 1080x1920 that is effectively only a 2 megapixel image you are seeing which might help explain the lower resolution. The outputted image will conform to the project settings. I am not sure what the slide show programs conform to.

I can't speak for Steve but for my part I think that I am missing something here. :(

I viewed the clip that you posted on YouTube. Now it might be that the resolution of that YouTube clip has been modified by the YouTube upload process so we really need to be able to see the details of the original .mp4 file that you have output.

Can you download the Media Info program? You can find it here: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download

When downloaded and installed can you use it to analyse your .mp4 file and post a screenshot of the results here, please?

That might help us to see what the underlying problem is.

As far as the close up zoom image is concerned, zooming in on the timeline is not the best way to create the close up image that you wish to use. As you zoom in on the original from 100% to 175% you correctly end up with an enlarged photo but the pixel dimensions of that will be significantly less than the 1000 x 750 proportions of that you started with. Taking the original picture and cropping as I mentioned in my post above will give you a much better result.

Viewing the YouTube clip on my 2650 x 1440 monitor did show some softening of focus but if your final output is going to be a standard DVD then the maximum pixel dimensions that you will achieve on that DVD will be 720 x 480. Unless the upscaling software on your viewing monitor/TV is good then you will always see some softening of the image.

Afterthought...

Did you receive the private message that I sent to you on 4th November?

/Users/sjfrankel/Desktop/Screen Shot 2019-11-06 at 11.56.53 AM.png - as requested

I note twosheds last comment about softening of focus. So if this will always be the case, still wondering if I should just stick with Photoshop slide show which is much clearer. Re You Tube upload, I think the video is no more blurry than the original output to hard drive.

I'm afraid I do not know how to find project settings as suggested by Steve and Sidd. Help here please?

I was unable to open private message from twosheds (long story) - would it be possible to resend to my email without going thru Muvipix?

The project settings are found under the Edit menu. Under Edit select Project Settings and let us know what resolution and frame rate is listed on the General page.

I had seen that but it was grayed out, so I figured I was in wrong place. Nevertheless, it HD 1080i, 29.97 frames/second - not grayed out it says Display Format: 30fps Drop Frame Timecode

It might be because it is a 1080i project instead of a 1080p project.

1080i quality is not much better than the 720p. 1080p has a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels, and it is a progressive scan, not interlaced, so it provides a picture with a full 2.07 million pixels
