PE18 crashes after trying to preview video

Postby angelah100 » Sun Sep 08, 2019 5:50 pm

We recently moved and just reassembled my desktop and attempted to edit son's soccer video. PE18 opens fine, I can add the video clips into the project, I can add transitions and I can create a file through Export & Share. If click along the timeline, the preview screen will update the preview. However if I click Play (or click the spacebar), the video will not play. If I click on Project Assets, I can't preview the video there, either. After clicking Play, the preview screen will no longer update the preview if I click on a different part of the clip. After I click Play, the menu bar is still functional but if I click File>Exit, the video will disappear and the program will freeze, the little spinning circle will spin indefinitely and if try clicking again I get the "PE18 is not responding".... etc.

I haven't changed any options or parameters since moving so don't understand why it's crashing. I've updated windows and the video driver but that didn't help.

Anyone have some advice on what to try?

Have you successfully edited this video before in version 2018 with no problems?

How much free, clean, defragmented space is on your hard drive?

If everything used to work and you've edited video from this same camcorder before, program choke due to lack of free space on your hard drive is usually the issue.

If that's not it, it could be a problem with a Windows driver update.

But let's start with the basics first.

This is newly captured video so no, I haven't successfully edited it before. Very good question though so I pulled up some video that I successfully edited in May and I have the same crashing problem.

I work in the D drive for video and it has 303GB free, defragged space. The C drive is SSD and has 91GB. Thinking that space might be an isssue, I moved the Adobe working files (scratch disks etc) from C to D but still had the problem.

This might be a dumb question but is there any way it could be related to audio? Under Audio Hardware clicked the Settings button to the right of Device (which is Realtek ASIO) and nothing happened. Am not sure that Audio Hardware is set correctly and quite frankly, I rarely pay attention to audio.
Device Class is ASIO (but MME availabe in dropdown)
Device: Realtek ASIO
I/O buffer 1024
Sample rate 44100

If I go to device manager, available sound controllers are Dell soundbar, Intel display audio, Nvidia High def autio, Nvidia WDM, Realtek Audio

Thanks

More likely it's the video itself.

Open one of your source video clips in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the report that is generated and paste it to this forum.

If it's not an issue with the video itself, we can look into drivers. But lets eliminate the video specs as an issue before we dig deeper.

Another bit of info - I can edit/preview the clips on my laptop just fine. I don't normally use my laptop for editing video because it has less computing power than the desktop and is almost out of hard drive space and no mouse etc, but interesting that it works.

Here's the report for the first clip:

Well, your video is 60 frames per second, but your hardware can easily handle that and there's nothing else about the video specs that would indicate a problem.

I think we need consider that the bug is in your operating system or drivers.

Although it might be worth downloading the free trial of Premiere Elements 2019 and seeing if you have the same problems with it.

If you don't have this problem with v 2019, we know the problem is with your program's installation. If you do have the same issues, we know it's related to your OS, most likely a buggy driver.

PE18 still didn't work, so I went back to PE19 and looked at all the settings. PE19 audio hardware was set to MME and PE18 was ASIO. I changed that setting in PE18 and now it works! Thanks for your help!
