Sony predicts a massive drop in Cameras sales

Postby sidd finch » Thu Aug 08, 2019 9:40 am

Sony predicts its camera sales will see a massive drop in the near future. How big of a drop? Sony believes it will sell 1.4 million fewer cameras than it did in 2017. In page 4 of the reports document, the “Supplemental Information” section, it reveals how well Sony is performing in regards to sales. It also gives an indication of Sony’s expectations for the rest of the year.

In 2017, Sony sold 4.4 million cameras. In 2018 it dropped to 3.6 million — which is about an 800,000-unit drop in sales. Now, it seems Sony is bracing itself for another 800,000 drop. This prediction is only for cameras, not information sensors.

I'm not surprised. Tourists used to carry cameras. Now they hold phones.

Very true. Such a shame that most folk seem to hold the phone vertically. (sob in frustration).

I'm actually going back to film cameras.

I've been going through the house and getting rid of stuff, and found my old film cameras and lenses. I still had about 6 rolls of B&W film in one of the freezers. I've got 4 rolls ready to develop (mostly wife, dog, kids, and grandson photos). There is a lot of new interesting B&W and color films out now. I've got CatLab 320 B&W, Lomography Lady Grey B&W 400, and Kodak Tri-X 100 loaded now.

For my upcoming birthday I'm getting a Lab Box to develop my own film (https://cinestillfilm.com/products/labbox-daylight-developing-tank) and a B&W mono-bath developer. I have an Epson V600 scanner to scan the negatives.

Ed so nice to see you posting and nice to see you continue to support "the road less traveled"

My only concern with home developing is the chemicals being used. Para-phenylene diamine, and its dimethyl and diethyl derivatives are known to be highly toxic by skin contact and absorption, inhalation, and ingestion.

Good ventilation and use of tongs.

Hi Sidd,

I'm not too worried about that. Basically it's a contained system. I will wear disposable plastic gloves and eye gear in case of a spill/splash. The info says I can dilute the the used chemicals and dispose them in the drain, but our drains feed into the Chesapeake Bay, so I'll dispose them in the county recyclable center.

I'll post some photos if your interested. I also plan to develop some in a coffee solution.

Ed yes please post. I would be interested in the coffee solution as that sounds interesting. There was a great documentary on the photographer for Howard Carter who was using glass plates photography.

Sidd,

Here's two photos taken from the same camera - Olympus Trip 35 (not my best camera, but I love the lens and the zone focus) taken with Kodak Tri-X 400 film. The one of my Grandson was developed in standard B&W chemicals (Sprint) and the one of my friend with her new dog was developed with a homemade instant coffee brew. You can see that the coffee photo has less contrast and detail, but I like the old style look.

That is pretty cool. I like the coffee develop as it really makes the picture look like it is old. I would have expected a bit more of a brown tint but it looks cool the way it is.

Hi Ed !! Thanks for sharing these. They both have a uniqueness about them, love the coffee bath one and how it seems to age the image. It is really great that you are doing this the old fashioned way :)
