download issue

Postby mattwinn » Sat Jun 01, 2019 10:50 am

After I downloaded a video (Basketball 05 Video) and try to drag it from Add Media, I get an error message that says
Add Media Failure
it lists the name of the file as courtdownload.mov
and the dialog box says The importer reported a generic error.

It would be helpful if you are able to provide some specifics. What device was the file recorded on? If it was a smartphone you might need to use handbrake ( a free program) to convert to a file into a usable format.

This is a background video from our site. I've downloaded it, uncompressed it and I received a similar error code when I tried to load it into Premiere Elements 2019.

I've been able to make it somewhat usable to converting it to an MP4 using Handbrake, but I'm not entirely satisfied with the results.

I apologize that this is a troublesome file. I'll figure out how to make it work and get back to this post in a day or so, okay?

I don't have PE 2019 - however if this is because it's a quicktime container it can be repackaged into MP4 with no quality loss with ffmpeg. (https://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/)

ffmpeg.exe -i tv0523.mov -c copy tv0523.mp4

Well, I finally figured out how to make the file compatible with Premiere Elements. But it's kind of ugly. I may recommend we pull that background down. It's definitely a challenging video file.

1. Open the video in the free download HandBrake.
2. In HandBrake, select the Preset for General/Fast 480p30.
3. Under the Summary tab, set Format to MP4.
4. Under the Dimension tab, type in the Size 640x480.
5. Under the Video tab, select the MP4 video codec and make sure the Constant Frame Rate is selected.
6. Click Star Encode to convert the file to an MP4.

I have a feeling if I am going to continue in this arena I need to first find out what a handbrake is and then obtain a glossary.
Thank you.

lol.... Handbrake is a free open source program that allows the user to convert video to a format that can be used without issue on video editors. :ha:

You picked a great place to ask your questions. Most of the users here are patient, helpful and encouraging. Regardless of expertise level of the question being asked....

Here's my basic tutorial on HandBrake. Although you should use the specific directions I listed above in this particular case.

I had my doubts about you guys after my first post but after the Handbrake guidance from Steve I got it and all doubts have been throttled and replaced with great confidence . I really can not believe I got it. It took me awhile but I got it.
Thank you Steve.
Sidd, in response to your Mark Antony Latin phrase (Brutus or Cicero. I cant recall that many years but it is Roman) I retort " The journey of one thousand miles begins with but a single step" or from the Bill Murray movie What about Bob "Baby Steps"
I just took mine with a shove from you guys.

Thanks again

Thank you for your much-appreciated endorsement, Matt! It's great to know we're still doing what we set to do nearly 15 years ago.

Some of the backgrounds and motion elements we have are over 10 years old, a few things have changed since then :)
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

That's true. When we bought a large part of our library, 720x480 video and the .avi format were standard. The H.264 .mp4 standard was virtually unheard of.
