New Hard Drive - Arrived in bag - out of box

Talk about anything here.

New Hard Drive - Arrived in bag - out of box

Postby Paz_Pazzaz » Thu May 09, 2019 9:29 pm

Title says most of it... I received a new hard drive in a plastic sort of bag. Immediately I wondered why there seemed to be two objects in the bag. I only ordered one hard drive. Nothing else.

This has to have gotten banged around while being sent from New York, New Jersey, where ever B&H ships from. Delivered by FedEx. It usually isn't easy to get the cardboard box open.

Opened the bag, the drive with one black plastic end cushion was totally separate from the box, with an open end. The other black cushion was still in the box. The drive itself is still wrapped in the metallic, sealed bag they come in. I have not opened the sealed bag.

Should I keep it or return it? I know dropping a drive can cause lost info on a drive that already has info. What about one that has never been used?

thanks,

Paz

I wouldn't take any chances and would return the drive. I would also get in touch and complain about the woefully inadequate packaging.

Allegedly, Amazon UK used to package HDDs in the same way until the number of returns of failed devices "encouraged" them to re-think their packaging policy for those devices.

I'm in agreement with John. If it was subjected to enough rough handling in transit to break open the box and for that black plastic spacer/shock isolator to come out, it certainly could have been damaged. Even if I installed it anyway and it worked initially, I wouldn't trust it. If it wasn't damaged in transit, it could have been an open box return. I would trust that even less. I would return it.

Add me in agreement with those above. B&H has a great reputation and shouldn’t hesitate to take care of this for you. I can’t imagine how this happened. I don’t think I could get a drive out of its box even intentionally mishandling it.

I am in the return it too, but I would also take a picture of how it arrived so you can show the state it was in when you received it. B&H is pretty good about returns.

And here I didn't think it was possible to ever have everyone agree on anything!

Thanks, guys! It's going back.

Really the credit goes to Dave and John. As founding members of the local chapter of control freaks they have been able to instill a certain level of "understanding" on the forum. It has been a needed addition. I am also excited to share the news that on the first Thursday of each month we are allowed to use Calibri font in our postings. Ok I am off to practice drawing straight lines.... :)

Dave, it takes some people a very long time to understand that they will always succumb to the inevitable .
