Can you identify this?

Postby Peru » Sat Mar 16, 2019 10:06 am

This is not a quiz, but a real life mystery. I was asked if I could identify this object found in an 1800's era house. Several reverse image searches and have been unsuccessful..

Here is the photo of it I received:

I cut it out for the reverse image search:

The small, round hole at the bottom contains a copper pin.
My first thought was that it was some part or attachment for a hand tool, but the copper pin is an odd thing to be part of a tool.

I will ask my youngest son Josh to take a look at it. If it was part of a weapon he will probably know as he has studied weapons of that era.

Blacksmiths were pretty good back then and could manufacture pretty much anything. Could have been something that was created for a specific purpose, not mass production.

Not very large apparently. It looks like it was made to be pounded into a surface (piece of lumber? tree? roof? joist?) and then have something run through through the square hole to be supported away from the surface. Maybe one of a number which would be placed at intervals? Some kind of a mount for another object? The copper pin is a puzzle.

If you rotate the picture it looks like a head of some kind of pickax, or some kind of iron bar holder. It looks like the tool is designed to hold some kind of square bar.

I'm going to see if I can get a side view of it.

Additional information:
It is about 4 inches long and about a half inch thick.

This little pick axe is as close as I’ve been able to find.

Just a guess, but that reminds me a little of an antique spear shaped topper (finial) for a gate or fence. That square hole could be meant to pass over a square wraught iron horizontal bar. If, so, there probably was a lower part now missing to balance the look.

It would help to see that side view. Is that square hole straight or tapered?

That sounds like a good suggestion.

I doubt that it is something like a joist hanger as the tapered part (to my eye) is the wrong shape to support any load and looks like it would easily detach from whatever it was hammered into. It could, though, be used to raise or separate something clear from a lower object/surface rather than hang something.

No luck here but I think the actual tool is much smaller than it looks in the photo. Can you put it next to a ruler or in better perspective somehow?

I bet it is some kind of curtain hanger. If you notice on the bottom of the picture there is some kind of screw hole that attaches something. Looks more like a decoration that a tool.

If you look closely at the first picture, you will see a penny, nickel, and dime to the left.

I think you might be right. The owner of the item is taking it to a local college to see if they can determine its age.

It is straight and not tapered.
