Discrete Graphics Card on Laptop

Postby VernonRobinson » Sat Jan 05, 2019 9:18 am

Team,
Looking for some information for my laptop. The performance seems to be quite sluggish in Premiere Pro. The specs are below:

Dell XPS 15
4K screen
32GB Ram
1 TB SSD
CPU is i7-7700 2.8Ghz

I have a simple 2 camera edit going with about 1 hour time line. While watching the playback, I can see the CPU hitting 70 - 80 percent utilization. I also noticed that the number of open file handles is ridiculous. At one point over 800,000. I see that it uses the onboard GPU/0 but never GPU/1. 0 is the onboard Ingel HD Graphics 630. 1 is the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 with 4 GB Video Ram.

Since it has been on for a week, I will reboot. This should take the number of file handles down, but it creeps back up over a few days. The stuttering makes it so that this setup is unusable. Looking for some suggestions.

Thanks,
-Vernon

Are you doing everything off of 1 drive. Files and edit from the same drive? Premiere recommends that you have a dedicated drive for files and a second drive for editing. Also a one hour timeline is a rather bog drive and really strains the system.

I agree with Sidd about drives. If you add an external, make sure it is a fast drive with a fast connection.

Also:
What type of media are you editing?
Proxies may help.

Yes I am using 1 HD. It is a 1TB SSD. The machine does have USB3. I could get a drive and do that. I would think the SSD could keep up. When I get the drive, which do I use for what? Put the temp files on the external?

Any thoughts on the graphic card and number of file handles?

I would put all the video files on the external drive and edit on the drive on the computer. Not sure if you can swap graphics cards on a laptop.

Sidd,
For clarity, I think you mean to put all of the raw footage on the external drive, but use the internal SSD for the Temp files. Are you recommending storing your project and related files on the external also?

If the USB drive is fast enough, I would put the media and project files on the external, but keep the Media Cache and Media Caches Files on the SSD.

USB 3.0, 7200 RPM or SSD.
