Re: How Peter Jackson Colorized WW1 filmI still don't understand how it's done. Frame by frame photoshoped?
Re: How Peter Jackson Colorized WW1 filmHaving watched the original programme on BBC I too wondered how it all came to gather and the video (linked) of Peter Jackson & Co at work pushes me to this conclusion.
First they sorted the speed and then 'cleaned' all the film. They then selected short lengths of film for correction, note there is very little movement within the clips. By that I mean the men move about but the background is essentially stationary. Next they masked out all the individual parts of the first frame and applied the colour to each mask. Very slow and tedious! Now by computer magic, the expensive software bit, they 'applied' the colour masks to each frame as the frame stepped forward. The bit I liked was where they used original uniforms as the colour source which is very respectful of the men. Adding the sound effects completes the picture. Well that is my take on how they achieved the finished article. Gerry
Re: How Peter Jackson Colorized WW1 filmThis is another short video created by the IWM and it speaks for itself!

Re: How Peter Jackson Colorized WW1 filmThe colorizing process sure has improved since the 1990s!
And it's nice to see it used for something more significant than simply making the first season of "Gilligan's Island" look like it was shot in color. HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro

Re: How Peter Jackson Colorized WW1 filmAnd thanks to GerryB for the explanation. Except for the initial frame, which is done by hand, the software processes the rest of the scene.
Re: How Peter Jackson Colorized WW1 filmPeter Jackson is a pretty intense film maker. This looks like it will be a pretty impressive film. Most likely in the vein of a Ken Burn film.

Re: How Peter Jackson Colorized WW1 filmThanks Gerry for the break down. I was impressed too how they had the uniforms and other artifacts in the editing room for reference.
