Principles of Video Storytelling

Postby Steve Grisetti » Fri Jun 01, 2018 1:15 pm

Subscribers to our site may enjoy my new multi-part tutorial series called "Principles of Video Storytelling."

It's a look at what makes for a simple story and how even the simplest story can give you a form to hang your raw footage on.

I'm kind of proud of it actually.

It is a good reminder for even experienced editors that if there is no story, you won't keep the attention of the viewers.
Well done, Steve.

I haven't been active in the last few years, but I still lurk and look around often. Thanks Steve for the 4-part Principles of Video Storytelling tutorials. I haven't been doing anything with my video and pix, but now you have given me new ideas of storytelling.

Sounds great Steve. Looking forward to checking it out!

Hope all is well with you and your family. And, BTW, I have an idea for a video that needs "the voice of Grisetti". :-)

Finally got a chance to view these. What a great set of tutorials, Steve. Some excellent tips for telling a story using the fundamentals. The use of audio from one clip with the video from another is something the pros do but I don't do often enough. J cuts and L cuts should be part of every editor's arsenal. :TU:

Attention span of 4 or 5 seconds for a visual. Sad, but true. :-8

Great stuff Steve as usual! Someone once said "editing starts before the camera leaves the bag"...oh right that was you long ago. I still think of that quote. Good to remember to shoot an ending clip when you are out and lots of B roll.

Suffice to say I downloaded the series and will be watching this weekend. I want to make sure that any summer vacation movies I take make sure to tell a story. I am sure my family will be delighted to know that I now have even more of a reason to put the "annoying" camera in their face..... :YY:

Well I took some time this weekend and watched the 4 part series. Really well done. At first I was expecting that with 4 episodes.... I might get the dreaded attention span affliction. But it was right on point easy to understand and I found my self re-watching the clips to really let it sink in.

It is also very interesting to not only see the finished product but to see the mechanics of your work space. You have a more organic flow to editing. I am always trying to tidy up the timeline and remove unused clips etc. But the way I watched your editing scheme it actually looked more productive.

And is it just me or have I heard that narration voice before ? ......

Coming from Sidd, who is such a talented storyteller, that really means a lot!

One viewer proposed that I do a longer version about how to create an entire documentary movie -- and that I should provide the raw footage for viewers to practice along with me.

Might be a bit out of my reach. But, for what it's worth, lynda.com does have a course that does that very thing, if anyone is interested.
