GPU acceleration in Vegas MS vs15

Postby Chrismar » Wed May 16, 2018 11:51 pm

Hi again Steve,

I understood from all the hype about vs15 that there would be faster rendering using GPU. However in the menu for Options > Preferences > GPU acceleration of video processing - this is 'Off' and I have no options available when clicking the drop-down arrow. In the General Preferences there is a tick box for 'Allow legacy GPU rendering' - whether its ticked on or not appears to makes no difference either.

I've done a bit of googling on the subject and encountered divided opinions and some say that CPU rendering is sometimes faster than with the GPU acceleration. Your thoughts & opinion would be appreciated please.

My computer specs are as follows:
64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
Processor: Intel(R) Core (TM) i7 CPU 960 @ 3.20GHz
RAM = 16.00MB
Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 vs388.13
Windows 10

Many thanks
Christine

It may be that your graphics card is too old and your version of Vegas just doesn't support it so it will not show up as an option.

Thank you TreeTopsRanch and vkmast for your replies.

TreeTopsRanch - I checked the specs required for vs15 and tick all the boxes. Regarding supported GPU, under Nvidia they say "For hardware rendering (NVEnc): GeForce 600 series onwards (6xx, 7xx, 9xx, 10xx)" so my graphics card falls within their recommendations.

vkmast - thanks for posting the links which make for interesting reading, especially the last paragraph in the 'fresh general comment'. I'm now inclined to think 'let sleeping dogs lie'. Everything is working fine as is, and I've rendered hundreds of videos over the years without GPU acceleration, so will continue as is.

Thanks again - your input is appreciated.
