MS Platinum 14 - Multicam / video formats query

Postby Chrismar » Mon Jan 29, 2018 7:16 am

Hi Steve,

I recently upgraded from Sony Vegas MS 12 to MS Platinum 14 in order to use the multicam feature. I have watched (and re-watched!) your excellent video tutorials on MSP14 and think I am good to go! Thank you so much for these tutorials.

I have two questions please.

I used 3 videocams at a wedding; 2 Sonys which give the .MTS format and an older JVC which gives the .TOD format. Should I convert the .TOD files and if so to what, or should I leave everything as is? A few years ago I did mix the .TOD & .MTS files together for a video, which SVMS12 handled just fine but I'm wondering how the multicam feature will handle different file formats?

So far I have laid the 3 video & audio tracks and synced them (unfortunately no separate audio like you had in your tutorial!) and saved the .vf file as a master copy. I filmed from the start of the ceremony to some of the dancing at the reception, so I have approx 5 hours of video to edit and whittle down. I'm wondering how my computer would cope with such a massive timeline. Would you suggest I break the video up into segments and have separate timelines for each event, i.e. The Ceremony, The Reception, The (full) Speeches, Dancing etc?

Many thanks
Christine

You don't give your computer specs, so only you know if your computer can handle so much video at once.

As for TOD video (and it's little brother, MOD) -- that was a very strange format that was kind of unique to JVC camcorders about 10 years ago and it was known to cause a lot of problems for video editors at the time it was introduced.

But I haven't seen that format in a long time, so I don't know if modern video editors can work with it or not.

So I guess once again it's kind of up to you, Christine. If it works for you, use it as is. If not, convert it to match the format of your other video.

My apologies Steve - here are my video specs:

64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
Processor: Intel(R) Core (TM) i7 CPU 960 @ 3.20GHz
RAM = 8.00MB
Windows 10

Is this sufficient to handle MS Platinum 14 and more specifically the multicam feature and 5 hours of video to edit, or do you recommend upgrading anything?

Re the .TOD & .MOD formats: I bought the JVC camera when starting out. I soon found out that .TOD caused many people many problems and yet I was lucky, I never had any issues playing it back & editing it on SVMS vs9 right through to vs12 and it always produced good quality videos! Nowadays I just use it for B Roll video.

Thanks again for your input and advice - always appreciated.

Your computer is adequate for editing with Vegas Movie Studio, Christine.

So, if you have an issue, it's likely to be related to those MOD or TOD files.

Thanks for confirming my computer is OK Steve, although "adequate" implies it could be better!?
I will keep a watch on the .TOD files.

It's nearly as fast as mine -- which handles multicam editing just fine.
