Canon hfr 800 does not do avchd

Postby videovillageidiot » Sat Nov 25, 2017 4:12 pm

I was checking out the Canon HF R800 and discovered it does not shoot avchd like the previous models did. It only does MP4. Is this a serious downside?

I currently have the 400 model but wanted to "upgrade"...seems like the 800 would be a "downgrade". Thanks for any answers/advice!

I'm surprised to hear that!

But not a big deal. In terms of quality and performance, AVCHD MTS and MP4s are virtually the same. AVC video has additional metadata in it (someone else can explain it better than I can), but it won't affect your editing.

You can edit either format equally easily.

I agree with Steve. Both formats use the same video codec. The main difference is the file format and audio codec. But, the quality and performance is virtually identical. The HF R800 is not a downgrade. Unless you have some specific need for AVCHD, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks Steve and Bob! I thought AVCHD was "less compressed" but apparently it's no better than the MP4. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys rock!
