Re: 2008 Video Contest

I put together a video slideshow for my family for Christmas. It consisted of photos taken during our travels. Some are panorama shots I put together from two or more photos. The rest are single shots. Each section is titled and music has been added for a sound track.

My question is whether there is any kind of a contest available for showing/entering something like this? The video flows rather well, in my opinion, but since I've never done anything like this before ....... All I know for sure is that everyone who has seen it says they are very impressed.

The program I used is DVD Slideshow Professional. It has a steep learning curve but I like the end results.

It might be something that could fit into the open category. There usually are no restrictions to the software that
is used to create the video/slideshow.

You can check out winners annd entries to past contests in the Gallery.
Happy Editing,

There will be an open category and a slideshow category, it will fit in either of those :)

I hope one of those specific categories will be using only still photos and Elements software.

We had some really great entries last year. I remember that I didn't feel confident enough to place an entry against those with more experience and more advanced software.

Since then we have welcomed a lot of new members to the forum, especially those who are new to Premier Elements and Photoshop Elements. I hope we can have a category where our members would feel comfortable if they are still learning the basics.

I'm with Cinde on this. Creating a slideshow is very different from editing video and it's very tough for someone who is using a consumer software to go up against someone using a professional software.

Doreen, I was just wondering by what you mean by consumer versus professional. I for one use Proshow Producer 3.2 and want to know if that was considered consumer or professional.

As I am on a roll with naive questions and idiotic comments I'll continue....... ;)

I will have to second John on that one. It doesn't matter teh software that you use. It is the person behind the software that matters. Same would hold true for any video camera. Garbage in..garbage out.
I have seen alot of video's created here by the people in here and I get blown away on everyone makes a great video no matter what they are using. So just go out there and shoot, edit and have fun.

Actually, software does matter. We've had these discussions before. This is a video editing website and 'effects' influence votes. That's just the way it is. A person using After Effects or ProShowProducer has an advantage over a person who is using just PE or PSG. Ideally, it shouldn't matter but the reality is that it does and it's like comparing apples to oranges. Same is true if comparing a slideshow to a video.

Look, I have no plans of entering this year's contest so there's no motive here on my part but rather, it's an observation.

As they say, it's not just the car but the driver too. ;)

Only to a certain degree. People tend to be more impressed with a Porche than a Civic (no offense to Civic owners - I used to own one).

Ah, but just because you own a Porsche doesn't mean you're a great driver!

(And a good driver could well outrace a Porsche in a well-equipped Honda.)

Ah, but the great driver always will have an advantage no matter what because he or she is a great driver. That's not the point. The point is the porche gives whoever is driving it an advantage. And....because of the type of site this is, people tend to be impressed with the porche because they're into what the porche can do. Effects have a strong influence. And past contests have shown this.

You guys make the rules and that's your perogative. Again, I have no plans of entering - I'm just voicing an opinion.

I think you all have good points. I know the reason I got Producer was for the extra omph that it would give my shows so I would definitely have a certain Effect Advantage over a Gold User. Though I don't use Elements or (can't think of the other Adobe product sorry  ) so I don't know if they have an advantage over me. Either way it doesn't matter, I look forward to entering the competition.
