Delete and Close Gap

Specific to Premiere Elements Version 12.

Delete and Close Gap

Postby Walter Seaton » Thu Jan 22, 2015 2:35 pm

When I select a portion of a clip which I want to delete and right-click on it on the timeline between the cuts, the line "Delete and Close Gap" is greyed out. This happens regardless of whether the clip is at either end or in the middle. When I then click on Delete, the selected portion is removed but an empty space is left in the timeline. When I then place the mouse pointer in the empty space the phrase "Delete and Close Gap" appears. When I click on the phrase, the empty space disappears. Can you suggest why "Delete and Close Gap" is unavailable initially and how I can get it back? Obviously what I have to do now is a pain.

Many thanks.

I don't have Premiere Elements 12 -- I switched over to Premiere Pro long ago. But, I did run into this when I was using Premiere Elements 7. Most often it happened after I had added a title, but I think it also happened other times. I found that left clicking on the clip first and then right clicking cleared whatever was blocking the option and it was available again. I don't know if it still works the same in Pre 12, but try it and see if it works.

This most often happens if you've bot audio and/or video on a parallel track -- which means that deleting your clip wouldn't create a true "gap" in your timeline.

If you can post a screen capture of your timeline, it might help us see if that's the case.

Hi Walter, Steve is right on. Most times the Delete and Close Gap is not enabled due to media on tracks above or below the space you are trying to remove, see the screen shots below;

Image

Once I move the media on the lower tracks out of the way Delete and Close Gap is enabled again.

Chuck, Walter's problem is different. "Delete and close gap" is enabled for the gap once it has been created. His problem is that "delete and close gap" is not enabled for the cutout. He has to delete the cutout to create a gap and then "delete and close gap" to remove the gap.

Walter, we would really like to see a screen capture of your timeline.

Thank you all. I have attached a screen shot as requested (please ignore the area under the timeline - its my desktop image). You will note that Delete and Close gap is greyed out despite there not being any other parallel tracks (not even audio). You must also excuse the poor quality of the images in the timeline - I am currently working with digitized material originally shot in 1938 on black and white Regular 8.

Thanks for the screenshot, Walter. But from the picture we can't tell if there are audio and/or video tracks ABOVE Video 1.

Can you widen the view of the timeline so that we can definitely see that there are no video or audio tracks that aren't displayed?

For the attached screen shot I started a new project and used a different clip. As you can see there are no parallel tracks, as I wrote before. Although Narration and Sound Track do not show well, those tracks are empty too.

Okay, I've got it.

Since version 12, Ripple Edit is only enabled on the Video 1 track. So you can't Delete and Close Gap on Video 2.

Move your clips to Video 1/Audio 1 and it should work.
