Saved yet again by Rollback-RX

Postby George Tyndall » Sun Aug 10, 2014 9:51 pm

I resisted for weeks a request to update Java -- but finally gave in.

As always before "updating" or "upgrading" anything, I took a "snapshot" of my system with Rollback-RX.

Upon restarting, I noted that NIS was failing to load.

Solution: Rollback to previous state and all is well.

I installed the latest Java update too. But, no issues with NIS, or anything else. Are you still on an earlier version of NIS? I'm on the latest version.

Glad you were able to recover.

I have NIS 21.5.0.19.

Is that the latest?

Java is 7 update 65, downloaded 10/2013, probably not the latest, but no issues noted.

Is there any compelling reason to try again with Java?

Thank you.

Yes, that is the latest NIS release.

The current release of Java is 7 update 67. The version you have is the previous public release.

Normally you should install every Java release. But, since you have not been experiencing problems with 7 update 65, you should be fine skipping this release. The main thing that update 67 addresses is not a security issue -- it corrects a bug that was reintroduced into update 65. The next critical security patch update is scheduled for October. Don't skip it. That one you should definitely install.
