Router recommendation?

Postby momoffduty » Wed Aug 06, 2014 10:17 am

Looking for a new router. The current router, a Belkin, has had issues for a long time now. Is there a better brand & model? Thanks.

I think Belkin is a pretty good brand.

Last time I bought a router I did a good bit of research and bought an Asus Dual band model. They probably have a new one by now.

It does well. Streams video content from Amazon live with only a few hiccups. Wireless connection for both laptops to printer, etc.

We do have a pretty fast internet connection from the cable company.

I think this is it:

We do not have cable so we need an ADSL modem/router. The previous one that we had was a Belkin. It still works well but a couple of years ago it was 'retired' for a more up to date Billion 7800DXL.

If I was in the market for one today I would probably also be looking at ASUS.

Thanks, I will check out the ASUS brand. The router is on the 2nd floor with the cable modem in a cabinet. I leave the door open. There are several of us on it from the basement and the 1st floor. Should I look for something with a strong signal? Not sure what that would be called in the product description.

Edit: I found this blog on CNET and I don't know what to look for:

My Asus router is on the first floor, my laptop and printer are usually on the second. No problems, so it does at least go up. Not sure how well it might go down, but I'd guess the broadcast projection would be in all directions.

Distance wise, my front yard is about 1 acre. I can take my laptop across the road, about 1/3 of the way into my cousin's 10 or so acres and still connect. My cousin's land is on higher ground than my house.

On the other hand, my sideways next door neighbor is also on higher ground than I am, in the middle of a couple of acres with LOTS of trees in between us and my laptop will not connect from there. (Used to be my mother's house.)

I think you just have to try it out and return it if it won't fit your needs.

Mom, Belkin bought Cisco's Linksys router line so I think you can find a great Belkin product. A trip through CNET.com does not hurt either.

I had a Belkin and it never worked properly. I don't remember what model but I thought it was junk.
I've had a Linksys for a few years now. No problems at all.
Just my 2 cents.
Thanks
Richard

hmm... obviously Amazon follows my every move. Received an email this morning letting me know that I can trade in my old router.

Once you hook up with 'em they put a cookie on. :) I can go to eBay or Google and ad stuff will pop up in the general area of something I've purchased. So, guess what, they have our number. You can exercise your cleaning options, but when you go back to Amazon they'll put it on again. For Amazon I don't mind as I've purchased so much stuff at really reasonable prices for me they're OK. But, this only points out to us to be careful what we do and clean the machines with regularity. :)

Must be why that 5d mark iii keeps following me around the net!

And to hpharley: our Belkin works great one minute and then another I have to unplug and reset. This has been going since about month 3 after purchase.

Belkin has traditionally targeted the "value" (i.e. cheap) market segment of home networking gear and they do good business in that niche. They're known for cheap rather than quality. D-Link also competes in that category. Syslink and Netgear market in a higher quality market segment and have a better reputation. It will be interesting to see what happens now that Belkin bought Syslink from Cisco. I think I read somewhere that Syslink and Belkin brands combined total about 30% of the home and small business networking market.

That's what my Lynksys used to do. Up and down the stairs, four, five times a day. Eventually I plugged it into a power strip that has an on/off button so I didn't have to crawl under the desk to unplug it.

The Asus I have now has done that, but only four or five times in the past couple of years.

Purchased the ASUS RT-AC66R Time will tell how it handles all of our devices on 3 floors. Thanks for all the input on this thread.
