Video masking?

Specific to Premiere Elements Version 12.

Video masking?

Postby don731 » Sat Jul 12, 2014 9:58 pm

Looking to figure out another effect:

I'd like to do a "picture in picture" clip that consists of a black screen, with a video clip playing in the black screen. This clip would be contained in an outline shape such as a football or automobile. So when projected, you would see the clip playing in just the shape of the outline.

Use Video Merge? Use a still picture photoshopped to have a transparent cutout in the outline shape? I'm on the Mac version of PE12.

Thanks!

Don

I'd use a combination of the Track Matte and the Picture-in-Picture tool, Don. I haven't tested them both in combination, but it should work.

First, I'd use the Motion effect to create the Picture-in-picture and position it in the video frame.

Then I'd use a white graphic of a football and place it on the video track above the PiP, sized and positioned over the PiP. Then apply the Track Matte to the PiP and use the football graphic to define the matte, which will cookie cutter it into the shape you want.

Do you understand how to use a Track Matte?

It's a bit complicated to explain on the forum, unfortunately, Don.

We've got some tutorials on the Track Matte on our site. They're for the old Premiere Elements interface, but they demonstrate the principle.

I also go into detail on using the Track Matte to create a number of special effects in my book -- which, despite being written for version 11, uses the same interface as version 12:

I'll make a point of creating a tutorial on the current version of the Track Matte for our next batch of tutorials too -- which should be on our site in the next week or two.

Not at present, since all of the version 11 tricks work in version 12.

Steve,
Looks like your Cool Trick of projecting a video through a frame will accomplish my objective. I'll give it a go this week. I think my photo editor Pixelmator wil save as .psd, and does layers.
