Lost audio in Chrome

Postby Bobby » Sun Jan 05, 2014 2:41 pm

Hi guys! This is a strange one.

I was working on a video upload to Vimeo and all worked fine yesterday and today.

Suddenly my Vimeo videos play, but there is no sound. I tried some of my other videos, but all silent. I tried other videos here on muvipix and they are silent too.

I changed from Chrome to Firefox and IE and all play fine on Firefox and IE. I then started Chrome back up, went to (for example) YouTube, and the videos play fine there.

Didn't see anything pertinent in Chrome settings. Tried rebooting, no difference. Sounds like a missing CODEC problem, but would Chrome be using different CODECs than Firefox and IE??? And all used to work fine until this afternoon. Didn't (consciously) load any new programs, apps, CODECs, plugins, etc.

Not sure what's up, Bobby. I'm using Chrome and I'm not having problems with audio on any of those sites.

Have you checked your Chrome Add-Ons? Occasionally one sneaks in there without warning and fouls things up.

Just have to ask why you guys are using Chrome when it was reported that Google was working with NSA to track every move you make using that browser. I know that Google has come out saying that they don't do that any more but do I believe that? No. Now don't get me wrong here...If you want to use Chrome by all means keep using it. Maybe use some kind of no script add-on that stops the tracking cookies.

Oh, I gave up to Google a long time ago. Not saying you're wrong, but once you buy into the Google ecosystem they have you. I use too much other Google stuff now, starting with my phone.

I use Chrome because it is significantly faster (to me) than Firefox. As far as IE goes, I don't trust MS any better.

No. When I first heard the video (just uploaded) not play sound, my thought was that the video file itself was bad. So I went to the original file that was uploaded, and it played fine. Next I tried other older Vimeo videos that I knew were good that also didn't play.

Then I brought up Firefox and IE, went to the Vimeo site, and all played fine. They I went back to Chrome and tried to play other videos on Muvipix and they DIDN'T play also.

Very confusing. Time to start playing around with Chrome settings.

And, again, check the Extensions that Chrome is using!

I was having trouble with Chrome and found that somehow it had picked up some extensions I didn't ask for. You shouldn't have anything except Ad Block Plus.

Duh. Solved. Google search to the rescue again!

There is a volume control on the Vimeo play window. Somehow I must have clicked that low/off when attempting to click the full screen icon next to it. The setting is persistent, even if you open a different window, re-access the site, etc.

Thanks for the help guys...
