Problem burning project to disk

Postby kenskopp » Mon Apr 22, 2013 1:34 pm

I have an HP Pavilion desktop. 1tb hard drive in computer and a 1tb and 3tb external hard drives. ATI RADEON HD4200 graphics card, 12 GB RAM with slot for additional 4 Gb, AMD Phenom II X4 840T processor. My questions as follows: In January I made a PRE10 project that is 3.68GB in size and on the timeline is 53m long with 11m of photos in a slide show and 42 m of video clips and a menu. I saved it to a folder and burned disc with IMGBurn. This past week I made a project with menus 4M of slide show and 25m of video clips and 1.66GB size. I was unable to burn to folder or disk. I cut the videos down to 13M and was able to burn to folder. I also previously burned a project to a folder that is 1.28GB in size. There was one quirk. At one point while I was working on the project the cti time line showed almost 2 hours. But it never showed again. The time line indicated a max 29m duration. I am using a Nikon DSLR and have the preset in pre10 set for DSLR1080p24. I am at a loss to explain why a 1.66GB project with 29m 0f duration had to be reduced to 17m duration to burn to folder. Also the 5 times I attempted to burn the full project to a folder, it said the burn was complete but nothing was in folder. The frustration is that it seems you go along with PRE10 and then for no discernible reason it doesn't work like it did before. Appreciate any thoughts or pointers. I am thinking of just deleting the project and start fresh to see if it will work. As a test I reburned the 3.66GB project to a test folder with no problem. Thanks Ken Skopp
PS I reviewed Steve's book on PRE10 and checked the forum but didn't finding anything that would help me understand this. Only other fact is that during the burn Norton Internet Security was indicating 100% CPU usage a lot after about 30% of burn was completed.

Are you trying to burn a BluRay disc or a DVD?

Are you photos optimized to no larger than 2000x1500 pixels in size?

What is the resolution and format of the video you got from the Nikon DSLR?

Hello Steve, I am burning a DVD. The photos in the Jan 2013 project are 2304x1536 pixels, the current one I am trying to burn is 4144x2637 pixels. The D3100 is set at 1920X1080 24fps. Also available are 1280x720 at 30, 25, 24fps. I see that I need to resize the photos. Is using 1920x1080 24fps ok or would one of the other 1280x720 work better with PRE10? Is it ok to resize photos to 2000x1500 pixels or 1000x 720?
Thanks again for putting up with a slow learner.

Random thought.....

Could it have been that you used the "far end" of some of the timelines as a temporary work area? and some of the "temporary work area" clips got left behind? (I have done this in the past! ) Could that be why your folder burning problem is arising?

You can shoot your video in 1920x1080 24p as long as, when you start your project, you select project settings for DSLR 1920x1080 24p to match it. (You'll also need a pretty hearty computer to handle that format. Ideally an i7 or quad core system. I don't know how AMD Phenoms compare.)

But do definitely downsize your photos to no larger than 2000x1500.

And, as John says, watch for stray clips on the timeline beyond the end of your movie that may be adding unnecessary length to your project. (You'll be able to tell because the light gray Work Area Bar along the top of the timeline will stretch way beyond the end of your movie.)

Thanks Steve, I am redoing the project and downsizing the photos. I will let you know what happens.

You may also want to do a Save As -- rename the project and save its project file to a new folder on your hard drive.

That's just in case your first attempt to burn created corrupted files. Saving the project file to a new folder keeps your new tmp and render files from bumping into the old.
