Some Images Don't Appear After Bringing Slideshow into PRE

Specific to Premiere Elements Version 10.

Re: Some Images Don't Appear After Bringing Slideshow into P

I went back in the slideshow in Premiere Elements. When I widened the clips for each image, I noticed a difference in the timeline between images that showed up and those that had the black empty space in place of those images that won't show up.

The first difference is that instead of being identified as IMG_0733, for example, as the images that appear are identified, the images that don't appear are identified in the timeline as "SMIL Region Background Color." The images that I had used in creating the slideshow through the Photoshop Elements organizer have no identifying file number at all in PRE.

The other difference is that the yellow line that runs horizontally across the timeline goes lower for the areas that don't show the images than for the areas where images do show up.

Good call, John!

Johnny, can you post a screen cap of your timeline so we can see if that's the case?

Opacity?

Yes, It is the opacity that is set differently for the images that show up and for the images that don't show up, but when I move it to 100% (which is where the images that do show up are set) the slides for the images that don't show up still remain black, still with no image visible.

I'll try to do a screen capture and show it here.

Slideshow Screen Capture.png

Here's a screen shot of the timeline. Hopefully I got it in here correctly.

Although I had the entire slideshow rendered, the areas where the pictures don't appear are red every time I open the slideshow in Premiere Elements, even though they were green after I rendered the slideshow.

Those yellow lines that run horizontally through your images indicate effects levels. By default that effect is Opacity, as indicated in several of your photo clips.

Try raising all of those yellow lines up to 100% and see if that makes a difference.

Steve,

I had tried that earlier, once I noticed them being lower than the lines over the other slides, but the change to the opacity still showed nothing but black.

When you zoom in on each of those clips, do they should Opacity as their property on your timeline?

Have you got other effects applied to them?

It says "Clip Opacity" on the clip in the timeline. When I right click on it, in Properties I am able to see the Opacity percentage. It's that that I moved up to 100% (which is how the clips that actually show the picture are set), but doing so doesn't show the picture.

The only effect that I have applied is the panning function, but I have that applied to all the pictures in the slideshow.

I don't think opacity has anything to do with the problem. If you look at the timeline, some clips are labeled "SMIL Region Background Color". That's the problem. Instead of the slide image, you have a plain black image. The question is why are those black clips there and where did they come from. I don't know the "why", but I have a guess about the "where."

SMIL is an acronym for Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language. It's an xml based markup language for describing multimedia presentations and can be used to exchange information between two programs. My guess is that the Send to Premiere Elements function generates a temporary SMIL file defining the slideshow and passes that to Premiere Elements which interprets the SMIL file and uses that to create the slideshow. Somehow, that process is going wrong and black background images are replacing slides. While the problem may be in either the Organizer or Premiere Elements, my suspicion is that the xml in the SMIL file is corrupted somehow when the Organizer creates it. Possibly, there is a problem with the image files or file names that's causing the xml to be incorrect. I don't know. Are there special characters or spaces in the file names for the ones that are missing?

Thanks for your message, Bob.

I had checked file names between images that show up and those that don't, but there was no difference in them or in the spacing, from what I could see. I've just been totally stumped by this.

I went back to Photoshop Elements to send the slideshow to Edit with Premiere Elements again. After doing so, I got the following warning:
Following file formats could not be imported in Adobe Premiere Elements
JPG.jpg

Again, I went to individual images, ones that do appear in Premiere Elements and ones that don't appear there, but there aren't differences in the way that the different files are named.

"JPG.jpg" sounds suspicious.

Do you have the file extension display turned on? It's off by default. Check your folder options. If the option to "hide extensions for know file types" box is checked, uncheck it. If you don't know how to find that option, see this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions#show-hide-file-name-extensions=windows-7

Now look at the file names in the folder. If they end in ".jpg.jpg" change it to ".jpg" and see if that takes care of the problem.

I unchecked the option to hide extensions for file types and looked at the files, one that appears in PRE and one that does not. The one that appears is identified as IMG_0733 - Copy.jpg and the one that does not appear is identified as IMG_0737 - Copy.jpg. The spacing between characters is identical in both image files' names.

It was worth a try. I'm out of ideas for now, though. You could always import the photos that are missing into premiere elements and replace the black image, but it's a shame that you would have to do that. Wish I knew what was going on.
