Alternative Method of Video Capture

Postby borgie » Wed May 09, 2012 6:59 pm

I am thinking of purchasing Sony Handycam HDR-PJ760V. The only problem is that it will only interface with PC via USB. The camera is HD Video Format = AVCHD.
Steve said that, contrary to what has been previously implied, Prel10 will only caputure via FireWire.
Could someone please suggest the best alternative (app???) to capture using USB to .AVI files and then get Prel10 to import files.
Thanks.

Unlike MiniDV tapes, the AVCHD camcorder stores files. When you connect the camcorder to the computer you just copy the files from the camcorder to the computer. There's no capture involved. Sometimes the manufacturer provides software to assist with the file transfer, or you can just use the operating system as you would copy files from any other storage device. Once the files are on the computer you just use Get Media from Files and Folders. BTW, AVCHD is Hi Def so the file type won't be AVI. It will likely be MTS. AVCHD edits natively in Premiere Elements 10, which I just learned myself not long ago.
Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

Dave is correct. The best way to work with AVCHD is to:
1) Start a project that is set up for AVCHD footage.
2) Connect the camcorder with a USB cable and use Premiere Elements' Get Media/From Flip AVCHD and Hard Disk Camcorder to open the Video Importer and select and import your video clips.
As Dave says, they come as as complete clips. You don't capture by streaming the video in, as you do with tape-based media.
