Steve, I did some checking - the audio is stereo. The only way that this camcorder can record in 5.1 is with an optional 5.1 external mic attached to the mini advanced hot shoe, which I don't have. Nonetheless, I tried the clip with project settings in both stereo and 5.1 and the results were the same.

But when I load the file into a project set up for stereo, the program says the project settings are wrong.

When I load it into a project set up for 5.1 audio, it works just fine!

Strange. For me it loads without the program complaining in either one.

Well you guys are going to think I'm looney (well maybe you did anyway) but I just went back and tried it all from scratch in a new project, set up for stereo in full HD and it actually plays full screen! Well, sort of. ](*,) Every few seconds I get a wide (about 25 % of the screen) black horizontal bar that quickly moves jerkily from top to bottom, breaking up the picture. I have my own ideas, but I'd be interested in hearing your opinions, which are certainly as good or better than my own.

Hey Steve, I was just wondering if it shows all the 5.1 tracks when you do that? There are only two internal mics.

I tried your clip with a project set up for AVCHD Full HD 1080i 30 and also AVCHD Full HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel. In both cases the file did get accepted on the timeline and I could play it back in full screen mode.
I tried also Chucks preset for DSLAR and getting the wrong project setting warning.
The clip looks just awesome, great camera!

Thanks Gerlinde. Now I'm going to have to stop addressing the "guys" and include the ladies too. :)
Although I'd rather that it be working on my own system, it's very helpful to know that it's not the clip, nor some kind of incompatibility with Premiere Elements. I appreciate you playing around with this for me.
So far I'm happy with the camera but I haven't put it to a real test yet. It was purchased for business use mostly, but will also be used for anything personal as it comes up.

Dave, I believe there is an issue with you graphics card. I see from your signature that you have a ATI Radeon card. I had a lot of display trouble with PRE9. I found a tip on the Adobe Forum, that improved things greatly for me. It would be worth it to at least check and see if it does something for your situation.

open Catalyst Control Centre Advance (ATI's Ntuner) click the 'graphics tab' open 3D, chose the all tab and click 'use application settings' for SMOOTHVISION HD:Anti-Aliasing + :Anisotropic Filtering

You can also play with the other settings and see if it does something, but take a screen print of your current settings first

I'm very inclined to agree with you Gerlinde. I'll give those settings a try, but it's going to be a couple of hours. Will get back with you. Thanks!

Well now CCC won't open. Click, wait, nothing. Apparently this is a pretty common problem from what I've been reading. I've tried several supposed fixes but no luck. I'm about ready to pack it in for tonight. Will update when I have more information.

Well, my patience wore thin. After arm wrestling with this all morning and getting nowhere, having already decided in my own mind that the video card was to blame, and needing to get on with other important things that I should be spending my time on, I ordered an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti. It might be a little more card than I need, but the price was right at $134.88 and I don't think I would have found anything satisfactory for much less. I'm taking a little bit of a chance here, but my gut tells me that things will work out. It'll be delivered Monday (gotta love that Amazon Prime). I'll report back. I do appreciate everyone's help!

Steve, on a whim I checked out the file with MediaInfo and it reports that it's 2 channel. I have no idea why it doesn't want to open for you except as a 5.1 project. I know this isn't keeping you up at night, but I found it interesting. :-k

I'm happy to report that upon installation of the new video card I now have the ability to view/play AVCHD full screen from Premiere Elements. Problem solved!
...
Unfortunately I'm experiencing another issue which cropped up a couple of days ago - a BSOD which often occurs when I connect the camcorder USB to the computer. One thing I do know is that it's not a conflict or problem with the video driver; I completely uninstalled all the ATI-related stuff before I installed the NVIDIA. I also know it's not the camcorder, as it connects without issue to my laptop. I hate troubleshooting these BSODs; just too time-consuming - but it's got to be done. Anyway, thanks again for all of your help everyone.
