dv-avi videos in pre v10

Postby skip » Thu Mar 08, 2012 1:59 pm

I recently bought a new computer (win 7, 64 bit) and upgraded premiere elements from ver 3 to ver 10. When I used PREL ver 3 on my old (Win XP) computer, I always converted my videos from avi files to dv-avi files using windows movie maker before importing them into premiere elements. It's my understanding that the equivalent program to windows movie maker in windows xp, is windows live movie maker in windows 7. I can't find any way in windows live movie maker to convert avi files to dv-avi files. Will PREL ver 10 handle avi files OK, or do I still need to do some sort of conversion? Thanks.

No. Frustratingly, Microsoft has removed that feature from MovieMaker Live.

The best free program for converting MJPEGs or similar AVIs to DV-AVIs is MPEG Streamclip. (free at http://www.squared5.com )

To use it, open the file with MPEG Streamclip and then open the AVI/DivX Exporter window from File/Export to AVI.

For Compression select the Apple DV/DVPRO_NTSC (or DV PAL, if appropriate) codec.
For Field Order select Lower Field First.
Change the default sound settings from MPEG Layer 3 to Uncompressed.
If you have widescreen footage click on the Options at the top right. Leave the Scan Mode as is but change the Aspect Ratio from 4:3 to 16:9.

If you would like to save these settings, click on the Presets button at the bottom left then click on the New button to name and save your settings. The next time you run MPEG Streamclip, you can go directly to the Presets button and Load your saved settings.

Click on “Make AVI” and choose a folder and filename for your DV-AVI file.

Thanks Steve. I think it was you who fixed me up on the avi / dv-avi situation when I first started working with PREL 3. Sure appreciate the advice on PREL 10.

Steve - following your instructions above to convert avi to dv-avi. If I change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9, should I also change frame size? Seems like I have several options for 1920 x 1080. Which would work best?

You want your DV-AVI to be 720x480. And that's regardless of whether your video is 4:3 or widescreen. They're both the same resolution. Just match the aspect ratio to your original file.

Will PREL ver 10 handle avi files OK, or do I still need to do some sort of conversion?

If those avi files are from a video camcorder, it's likely you will be able to use them without conversion. If you got them from some other source, such as the Internet, and they are using a non-standard codec, they will likely require conversion.

Premiere Elements 10 is much more compatible with other video formats than earlier versions -- especially mpeg based video such as what most current cameras record. Go ahead and try using the unconverted files and see if they work. If they don't, you'll need to convert them.
